I don't understand

I have been eating well under 20 carbs. This morning, I weighed and I'm back at my original weight. I do don't understand. Please help no sugar, corn. Pasta potatoes or rice. I don't want to give up. But maybe this isn't going to work for me. Help.

How long have you been trying? Also, it is not unusual for your weight to fluctuate by several pounds based on how hydrated you are.

clackley 01-09-2017 07:55 AM

Maybe you could share a typical menu? Sometimes there are things that might be higher carb than you think or too much protein can be a problem. It is easy to push out of ketosis in the beginning because you are not fully adapted yet. That is why Atkins came up with the 2 wk. induction list of foods and amounts.

Didn't you mention in another thread that TOM just arrived?

I'm well past that, but when I experienced TOM, my body typically retained 5-7 lbs of water--that I would eliminate as soon as TOM departed. This is a totally normal hormonal reaction that many women experience.

I'd suggest you stay with your plan and NOT weigh until post-TOM.

chrisboli54 01-09-2017 09:38 AM

Yesterday I had a lot of coffee with cream since I'm visiting my parents away from home. They have nothing but carbs. Lol. So I easily had 4 oz of heavy cream, salad with ranch. 1 ounce of ranch. Dinner was baked chicken with rotel tomatoes and cream of mushroom soup. Maybe a quarter cup of that mix. That's it. Day before salad with ranch, about the same in cream and 4 hot naked wings. About the same menu daily. I've cut out my pickles too. My tom is here. Heavy today. I pray that's what it is. Because I'm reallllly trying.

clackley 01-09-2017 10:46 AM

I don't see anything particularly concerning about your menu. Although, if you are extremely carb sensitive, I would avoid any commercially made 'cream of anything' soups as they contain all manner of 'thickeners' (read wheat and carbs).

You may also be over consuming vegetables. I know this sounds almost silly but unless it is just green leafy veg, they all add up.

My best bet in what is going on with the scale is as mentioned before ~ hormonal. It is quite common to hear this is an ordinary thing to have happen. You are quite new to this woe and I believe it would be good to continue on with your plan and take it as something that you will deal with regularly but the other 3 wks. of the month will bring more demonstrable results (i.e. scale weight loss).

Keep up the good work and don't let a silly little appliance get the better of you!

It's definitely TOM.

I have the pleasure of 5lbs sneaking on 3 days before TOM, during TOM and then it not coming off until 3 days AFTER IT IS COMPLETELY GONE.

Then I bloat right back up for the same regime for ovulation.

Yeah me! NOT.

Hang in there, you are doing JUST FINE.

Right with ya, I won't weigh during and usually wait several days after to weigh again. Don't get discouraged Chrissy! It will come down.

Chris, TOM is a HUGE culprit! Also, I've learned that for me personally veggies almost ALWAYS throw me out of ketosis....even the "acceptable" ones. Everyone is different, but some of us are far more sensitive to carbs. Are you tracking EVERYTHING in a food tracker? There are so many excellent FREE online trackers, you really should explore the options. I know when I finally got serious about tracking everything I learned very quickly that my body loses best when I keep my carbs at or below 5% for the day, my fat at 65-70% and the balance in protein. YMMV.....but if I could finally find my body's super secret code to weight loss, then you can too....now I just have to discipline myself to actually STICK WITH IT long enough to reach my goals!! :p

You can do this and you're off to a GREAT start, don't give up!!!!

Charski 01-09-2017 03:23 PM

In case you aren't aware - heavy cream has about .83 carbs per ounce, so right there you're nearly 4 carbs, and that's if your measurement is correct - you say "easily" consumed that much - I'd start measuring it so you know exactly what an ounce, or a tablespoon, looks like.

Also, ranch dressing - check the labels - they can be full of sugars - look for high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, etc. Check the label for carb counts and again - measure!

Cream of mushroom soup is about 1 gram per ounce - so if you had 4 ounces (1/4 cup) that is 4 more carbs.

Rotel tomatoes - 4 grams per 1/2 cup.

Carb sneak happens very easily! You have to be very vigilant of exactly what ingredients are in the foods you eat and how much you're eating. I know people will say "you don't have to count on Atkins" but you DO have to be aware of where those hidden carbs are lurking!

AND then throw TOM on top of that and you can see how you can easily go up a few pounds!

Avocado 01-09-2017 04:32 PM

As Charski says, hidden carbs abound. I've found so many items that I assumed were zero or VLC to actually have carbs. Especially processed foods.

For example some mini cocktail sausages at Xmas, I assumed they were zero (pork) but they turned out to be 2g each (and these were bite sized). Luckily I read the label and didn't purchase.

It's also important to calculate carefully. I had a couple of instances where I ate something because the carb count was expressed as 8 grams PER 100g and I didn't see the PER part !!

Hopefully, the loss will return soon. But if it doesn't, don't give up. Post your detailed menu on this thread for further feedback. It should work at induction stage!

merittandrews 01-10-2017 08:34 AM

Rotel also has sugar...

Just looked at the can of Rotel tomatoes yesterday so it was fresh in my mind and thought I'd add: they have 3 grams of sugar per 1/2 cup serving as well!

chrisboli54 01-10-2017 11:10 AM

Thanks y'all. Since yesterday I'm down 4.3 pounds. Tom is almost gone and I ate lettuce and baked chicken on top for lunch and poached chicken and green beans for dinner. I'll be home tomorrow morning where I can weigh in on MY scale. I did get some Lindt 90 % cocoa. Pretty good. Tastes like bakers chocolate. Lol. I must be in ketosis bad. The taste in my mouth is disgusting. Thanks y'all. CT

Avocado 01-10-2017 11:15 AM

Lindt 85 is my 'sweet spot'! I've tried 90 and 99 but prefer the 85. Now the 70 almost tastes too sweet!

chrisboli54 01-10-2017 11:48 AM

Stuff ain't cheap. I'll try 85

How much do you pay for it? In UK we can usually get Lindt on promo for 1.50 ($1.85). I don't think it's so expensive as a 100g bar will last me a week, whereas in the bad old days, I would eat cheaper milk chocolate bars daily - which would add up!

Grace1313 01-11-2017 05:30 PM

Where I am they are between 2.40 to 2.70 US a bar. They are big bars, but still a bit pricey. That is at Walmart, grocery and drug stores would be pricier, unless you find a sale.
If you look at it from how many regular candy bars I bought, I guess it is not that bad.
How much are they in your area Chrissy?

chrisboli54 01-12-2017 01:54 AM

Hey....about the same I reckon. I've only had luck finding them at Walgreens. They are $3 plus tax. But, allowable chocolate? I'm game.

DKells 01-12-2017 05:36 AM

Yeah, I'm on the Montezuma's 100% Absolute Black and a 100g bar has lasted me 10 working days. I did pay 2.50 for it. But in the last few months of 2016 I developed a chocolate problem and was consuming disgusting amounts of milk chocolate. Easily spending a tenner a week on it some times. :stars:

It is, however, now sold out in the shop I got it from, so obviously lots of people have had the same idea

Been there. It's actually disgusting how the UK supermarkets and Cadbury's push milk chocolate on the public. Massive displays of cut price chocolate in large bars or bags of buttons or multi packs etc.. It's so enticing, and yet so bad for everyone, including kids. The portion sizes have grown so large, and the cost so low, that it's very easy to overdo it. I think like the fast food industry on super-sizing, they should practice some self-regulation, because the obesity stats show that consumer's can't!

clackley 01-12-2017 07:03 AM

Lindt bars are 3.49 here and occasionally can find it on sale for $3.00. If you can find the 99% Lindt, those bars are only 50g and cost the same as the 100g bar.

WoodysWorld 01-12-2017 12:48 PM

The have them at Target too! Down the fancy shmancy
chocolate and nut aisle.

I don't recall how much they are,
but yeah, one bar can last me a good
week since I only have one or MAYBE
two squares a day, when I feel like it
(never every day).

I basically reserve them for when I need
"that something sweet" after dinner that I
can't seem to shake. I have one square and
eat it pretty slowly since those suckers sure
don't melt in your mouth very fast!

Absolutely nothing I'd ever want to binge on,
that's for sure.

Now Hershey's Special Dark? I could eat a
FAMILY SIZED BAR THE SIZE OF GUAM in one
freaking sitting and never blink an eye.

So I'm thankful for the Lindt, even if it's a little
pricey, cuz a little bit goes a long way and I
never want "more"... which is saying something... >cough<
