pureeing dates

Hi, new here, and have a question.
I have a recipe that wants dates put into a blender and mixed with dry ingredients, which I did. And the result is sitting in lumps in the fridge, not as smooth as it should be.
NOW I think the dates should have been pureed first. Is it too late to add a little water? The dry ingredients are almond meal and cocoa.
It's edible, and tasty, just not what I expected. I will probably make it again, but actually puree (with water) first, then add the other ingredients.
