First time in 30 years...

Sorry, I had to share Oh my goodness, today I've done some things I haven't done in a long time:-
  • I set foot over the threshold of a gym
  • I got inducted in the use of the "machinery"
  • I paid my subs for a 3 month membership

I've not been inactive for the last 30 years I just haven't ventured into a gym. This one is only 2 miles from where I live (I only discovered it a few months ago and have been plucking up courage to enquire about it).

The lovely young lass who did my induction tells me that if i'm popping in during the day i'll likely have the place to myself (which suits me - I don't feel up to being all red-faced, hot and sweaty in front of lots of buff, younger people!). The "machinery" was way simpler to use than I thought it would be and boy have things changed in 30 years!

My main reason for this is that the weather here is so darned rubbish, even in summer and I just can't get going with any sort of reliability on a program of walking/jogging/cycling etc. Winters are even worse. Pic below of the forecast for the next couple of days...

Wow! That is crappy weather! Great job on joining the gym. I was telling DW that I'm thinking of rejoining my former gym or a different one come fall.

WTG, Evie! Enjoy it. Do they have a pool or anything like that? I love the gyms that have pools, hot tubs and dry saunas. I can't take the steam rooms. Don't think those are common in gyms anymore.

Excited for you! Now you have a place to go where the weather is always fine.

Yes, nothing more dispiriting than having to battle the weather - I guess from fall onwards your weather is pretty inclement too

Definitely no hot tubs, saunas or steam room though there is a shower that doesn't currently work. Sadly there is no pool either - the nearest pool is a 50 mile round trip! The gym is not at all fancy and is upstairs at the local village hall, it isn't staffed, once inducted you just turn up and use the equipment - the doors are always open though the electric is on a timer so the equipment has no power to it between 10:30pm and 06:30am

Well, that's kind of cool. If you want to have privacy, you can! I'd be into that very much. Too bad about the "no frills" part, though.

Yes, there are advantages and disadvantages of living on a remote island - we don't have much in the way of frills but the gym can be left unlocked

Yes, by Mid- October it starts to get pretty chilly- at least by standards and it's usually well into April before it turns consistently nice, however, this year all of April was quite cold and took till some time in May for the nice weather.

I can and do walk outside all year, but if it's really snowy, icy or windy it's not at all enjoyable (or safe- particularly the ice part).

There you are! Love your new Avi. The bird was beautiful, but you aren't half bad, either.

Oooh, that's a long old winter! We don't often get ice here - the gulf stream keeps temperatures pretty mild (rarely below freezing), if it snows it never hangs around for long but means lots of wet and windy weather (regular winter gales of 80-90mph winds, sometimes more!).

Thanks! Photo was taken last year when I was 10lbs lighter than now - my new specs had just arrived - i'd turned into a blind old git and now need to wear specs all the time, not just for reading

Oh, man. Me too. In fact, I should go get my vision rechecked and get a script for a new pair of glasses. I'm probably doing more harm to them by wearing the reading glasses all the time. I take them off and put them down sometimes and find I immediately need them again. Growing old sucketh.

80-90 mpg gales? Wow! I was thinking of moving there while you were describing your winters, until I reached that part. I think I'll stay here in the States, where I can move from climate zone to climate zone.

I usually head to Texas or southern Spain for a month or 2 in the winter - it just gets too grey, windy and depressing here

Where in TX? I used to live in and around San Antonio. Love it up in the Hill Country and Padre Island is also great.

Usually fly into Houston, hire a car and head for the coast (Surfside Beach) for a few days exploring around there and visiting Galveston island then head south, stopping off at Rockport. Down in the south we usually stay near McAllen because it's really handy for all the good birding areas including South Padre Island (I really love SPI - apart from at spring break and could actually spend the whole winter there!). Usually have a few days in Hill Country which I also love - i've stayed in Rio Frio and at Burnet. Funnily enough i'm sitting here this morning typing this and wearing my Lost Maples State Natural Area t-shirt

Lots of winter Texans down there - be ideal for you and your RV

By the way, great to see you in your new avatar!

That sounds nice, Evie. I've thought about wintering in TX and staying until the Spring flowers bloom, but I am so tired of humidity. I've been back on the east coast since July of 2000 and I just need to get back to the west. It's nice that you can come and spend a month or two. Sounds expensive, renting a car and all.

Thanks about the picture. It's not recent and my weight was down. I think it was about 5 years ago or so. I've never used it for my avi so I thought I'd post something different. Have a great day/evening and enjoy your gym!

Hi Cheryl - I didn't find March in TX too humid - very comfortable most of the time - compared to the Outer Hebrides anyway The odd day when it got to 90/100F and also humid was a bit uncomfortable for me.

If we come to Texas we only have a month - if we go to southern Spain we have two months for the same cost and we take our own car! We just have 1 longish holiday a year, DH is retired and I work for myself - early in the year is my quiet time and as long as I have internet I can still work. We got a good deal on the car rental, though this year the £/$ made the trip more expensive than we'd hoped.

Wow. Let's see. Should we go to Spain or Texas this winter? Hmm....

I've never been out of the States so it's hard to imagine you'd turn down 2 months in Spain for one month in Texas. I think that's pretty adorable, actually. Once a Texan, always a Texan.

I'm in a terrible mood so I need to run away now. I see you found my journal. I'm not ready to respond to anything over there just yet. It's almost 7pm and I've yet to eat any food on my UD. It's not been a stellar day for me. I'll write about it later.
