I'm one of those people who's A1c is in the high fives (prediabetic) with normal fasting sugars (high 80's to low 90's). Changing my diet to cut out carbs did not bring it down, plus I only weigh 106 and have exercised my entire life. So, there's nothing more I could do short of going on Metformin which I've been on for two years. My A1c remains in the high fives even with Metformin and low carb diet. My doctor is not sure what's going on but as long as it's not going higher he's keeping me on it. BTW, my fasting insulin is low, last time checked it was 3.

im working on it. just started low carb diet a little less than 2 weeks ago. my starting morning fasting glucose was 236 and thats with 2000mg metformin (4x500 pills). today 11 days later it was 131 and im only taking 1000mg (2x500 pills)

my goal is of course to be under 100 with no metformin.

3 weeks ago at my yearly physical my A1C was 8.7 i have a 3 month diabetic check up in may, hoping to shock my doctor

A1c is the average over 3 months, so you don't know right away?

Getting off of diabetes meds

Some may be able to get off of the diabetic meds. I have found that as I lose weight my ability to control is better. Blood sugar issues never goe away for me. It appears to be there forever. I can go a long time with normal blood sugars doing low carb and one meal sets it off.

If I stay totally on a low carb diet, I can go without my meds. If I cheat at all, my numbers climb. I recently was able to cut my glipizide in half (with doctors approval). I up the amount if I know I will be splurging.

My downfall, of course, are the bread products and some sweets. If I stay on the program those cravings go away physically. I doubt they will ever go away mentally. I grew up on southern comfort food.

My goal is to get past the mental cravings by trying out different recipes that will give me the same kind of "comfort", but are low carb. I also have CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) stage 3. Chronic kidney disease is a scary thing. It is a great motivator to keep on track. I'd like to live a long life and enjoy what I have been working towards my whole life. Keep that in mind when that chocolate cake is taunting you!

Good luck! I think it can be done.

I am past getting off meds. I'm 62 (almost) and have to get to a good A1c with diet, which is why I'm here learning more about LCHF. I'd love to go off one or two of the meds!
