How did you choose your endocrinologist?

I've got to choose from 5 or so pediatric endocrinologists in my town. How do you know where to go? Thanks!

Do you like your primary doctor? The referrals I get from my primary are usually good.

However, I got my current endo from a retired physician who used to be my sister's boss, and was a professor at the medical school. He knew someone practicing in my area. If you know someone in medicine (nurse, doctor), that individual might know the 'good' ones.

Another source is your local pharmacist. I go to a small, local (non chain) pharmacy and frequently discuss my meds, etc. with the pharmacist. I've found that he knows the 'good' doctors in the area.

Well, I asked around and found the doctor people recommended. I called to get an appointment, and even though my insurance doesn't require a referral, this doctor's office requires everything to come directly from the primary physician. I tried explaining that I wanted a second opinion, but they said it didn't matter. All of the pediatric endo docs are in that one practice. Can I take her to another regular- meaning non pediatric endo? Help!

Can't you get a referral from a primary physician?

My niece was seen by a pediatric endo when she was 11, and the referral was from her pediatrician.

As to going to a 'regular' endo, I'm not sure. There seem to be a lot of pediatric endos around, and I suspect that a regular endo might not see children. I've never seen a child in my endos' waiting rooms (2 different doctors over 15 years).

But it wouldn't hurt to call and ask.
