Feeling discouraged.....

I have stalled after the first week. I dropped 20 the first week and nothing since then. I actually gained 1 lb. I will be 4 weeks post op on Wednesday. It is really discouraging and I am beginning to thing this surgery is not going to work for me even though I do feel restricted. I am doing everything right. I am getting in at least 64 oz of water, 70 grams of protein, and keeping carbs around 50 even though the doctor said 70 is fine. I have also started to incorporate some exercise into my routine now that I feel a better. I keep hearing from everyone that the scale will move again but it is disappointing that is has not started yet. :-(

You are burning up fat, but due to the trauma of surgery and all the other hormonal shifts, you are retaining water. My first month I lost 23 pounds (so about the same as you). My second month total was only 8 pounds. There after I averaged about 10 pounds a month, and went on to lose close to 140 pounds. You will too.

I remember it well. I was so swollen I couldn't button my capris I had to do the pregnancy trick where you weave a rubber band around the button, through the button hole and then back again. About 8 weeks out, my pants suddenly got saggy, and then months 3 through 8 I was burning through sizes. You'll get there. I think the first 6 weeks or so are very emotionally difficult. You've given up so much, but have yet to reap any of the rewards. They're coming, and when they do, you won't believe how good you feel. In the meantime, be good to yourself, and treat yourself to some non food fun if you can. I got pedicures, bought fancy lotions, new socks, tickets to shows I wanted to see, flowers, etc.

Thank you so much for your responses. I had posted the same question/concern on another forum and all they told me was to give it some time. I am actually getting details about your experiences and it makes me feel so much more enthusiastic.

Yup most of us go through the dreaded third week stall. I actually went up.
This totally reminded me of that period of time for myself... Here's my VLOG from 2010!!

Don't give up! Stalls will happen along the way. If you're exercising, keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat (YAY!!) and that can cause the scale to not move the way you want. When the scale doesn't move, focus on how you're feeling, how clothes are fitting, is it easier to walk and talk and do everyday activities. Don't let a number be your motivation. You can do this!

Since this is an old thread I feel okay with what I am about to say. Some may consider it harsh, but this post is not directed at anyone, just have a few hings to say: Even on the most lenient and flexible low carb plan, 50 grams is about the highest most limit for maintenance. Losing good weight on 50-70 is almost impossible, surgery or no. Dr's may say otherwise, but we should know better.

I agree, BonnyLass. The day I listened to my nutritionist and started adding "good carbs" was the day my weight loss slowed, then stopped, then I started to gain. Granted, I took the carbs to another level, but had I not started back, I know I would have got to my goal. When I finally gave in to that green light...what a slippery slope.

I definitely agree. I am six months post op and I noticed the weight loss slowed dramatically. I know it was due to keeping my carbs around 70gms like my nutritionist said. I just did the 5 day pouch reset and lost 9 lbs probably because it is so low carb. I am going to just go with carbs around 30 to see if I can lose this last 50 lbs
