You need to stick to plain, FF yogurt for phase 1. Try draining it and adding herbs for a dip for veggie sticks. Delicious. You can add artificially sweetened yogurt in phase 2. Hope this helps.

Plain yogurt. I'm going to have to massively load it down with Splenda and vanilla extract. One time I accidentally bought some plain yogurt instead of vanilla and I opened it and ate some and spit it back out. Yuck. I can't wait to eat my low carb strawberry yogurt on phase 2.

Laura......I made yocheese out of the yogurt and like it MUCH better. I put a little vanilla and splenda in it and sometimes some sf davinci's and it's pretty darn good. It's much thicker and creamier as yocheese!

yocheese? what's that? haha, I've never heard of it. and what's davinci's? i've seen it in a few recipes but i have no idea what it is.

Yocheese is yogurt that you strain; all the whey drains out and leaves a thick, creamy *cheese*. I do this by dumping my container of yogurt into a strainer lined with coffee filters over a bowl. Takes about 24 hours.

Davinci's is a sugar free syrup that you can use in lots of stuff and in comes in many different flavors....it's great stuff to have around!

I am glad that beans and legumes have been added to phase 1! I do have a question regarding this addition, why not green peas? They are my favorite!

Green peas are a starchy veggie and you can add them in as a starch serving when you get to phase II.

Hi, my husband and I are new to South Beach. We're making the switch from Atkins because my husband has heart disease. Recently my brother had stents placed in his heart becauses of blockages. His cardiologist suggested South Beach as a good diet for weight loss. As all 3 of us have lots of weight to lose, I thought it best to follow my brother's lead and start South Beach. I have been reading everything I can on Low Carb Friends and copying food lists, menus and recipes. What I don't have a handle on is portion size. There are specifics for dairy, nuts, and fats; I don't see anything really for vegetables, protein, and cheeses. The main problem for my husband and myself is portion control, so I really need some parameters to follow. I was also a little frustrated by the delicious-sounding recipes posted in Low-Carb Friends because they all sound soooo good, but nothing is mentioned about what is considered a portion. Maybe I'm missing something - can you help. Thanks!

If you don't already have the book, PLEASE get a copy. I would seriously suggest that you use the recipes from the book and the SB cookbooks until you get very familiar with this way of eating. You library should have copies. The recipes posted on this thread can have to many tweaks and iffy ingredients for a beginner to use. If you stick strictly to the food lists and use common sense, you will be fine.

As for portions, half a chicken breast, about 4-6 oz. of meat, an ounce or two of cheese is about right, with a little more IF you are really hungry and need seconds. If you look at the veg recipes in the cookbooks, you will see that veg recipes are VERY generous, as are salads. All dairy products should be low fat. You really don't have to count carbs or calories in the beginning. As the book says, you eat until satisfied, but not stuffed.

Since you're are starting this because of health problems, I can't urge you strongly enough to work the plan AS WRITTEN and not start off with iffy recipes. Please don't try to bend the rules. It's good that three of you are starting off together; you will support each other. If you want to post on the check in thread every day, you can ask any questions and we will support you as much as you want. (Maybe more. )

What if I hate eating yogurts and milk? Can I eat more lowfat string cheese or fat free cheddar? And are the GG Bran Crispbread crackers okay on Phase I?

I would stick with normal amounts of cheese and NO, crackers are not okay on phase 1. Do you have the book? It outlines what foods are acceptable for each phase and why. You can use the stickies for a food list, but you need the information in the book as well.

No, I have to admit, I didn't get the book yet and have been trying to put together what the diet is about through research here and on the internet. I am hopeful I can get to the stores today and pick up one.

No and no. Low fat dairy. Good fats come from olive oil, nuts, avocado, etc. No sat fats.

Im having major cravings, im on the 4th day of phase 1...Please HELP! What is there that stops the cravings? I have tried low fat chedder cheese....getting sick of it..is there anything else I can do? Cracker Barrell Bisquits are calling my name!! AHHH!

Don't even go into Cracker Barrel at this point. They have a good LC menu, but if you have a weekness for biscuits, why torture yourself?

Eat some protein and vegs, drink a big glass of water and go for a walk. You are stronger than a greasy, doughy biscuit.

Oh believe me, not going to that place for sure, I was just thinking about them and my mouth started to water and crave them Do you have any recommendations on something that can help the cravings?
