Partyof8, honestly, I'd be ultra gentle. Try getting into each position (stretching too far can be just as hard as contracting too hard), and see where you feel any pull and stop, then back up by about an inch, and mark that as your limit. So don't stretch up too high on the warm up, underarm exercise, pelvic rotations. On your hip and behind, get into position and feel what is comfortable without the twist of your waist pulling. And with the stomach exercises, I would elevate your entire back to a 45˚ angle and focus on the points you're working on, just to get some work, but not too much. For the leg up ones, simply pulse at a slight angle to each side, in the angled position, for now.
Thank you Jiggle!! I will try that!

Hello everyone! You may remember me appearing last month.

Unfortunately for medical reasons I was unable to start my journey with Callanetics. It severely constricted my movement and stretching ability and even a no-impact exercise was too much. However, after a few weeks of rest and healing (and a trip to the doctors) I'm fully ready to begin again!

I'm going to start extra gently this time - especially with my back.

I'm going to commit to 15 hours this month

Hi Party

I have just completed my first hour. I'm very jelly-legged and can definitely feel it in the hip area (which is good because the legs/hips/butt are my problem areas). Luckily this time around, my back feels perfectly fine.

I took measurements this morning of my chest, rib cage, waist, lower abs, hips, upper thigh, middle thigh, knee and calf because I figured it's best to track more than just three measurements to accurately see things shifting about.

I'm going to re-measure after 5 hours and see if there's even a slight difference.

Hello cowshedder!

Good plan on the measuring, it really made a difference in how I was seeing things progress.

Don't forget to listen to your body. Since you're back from having medical issues, this is doubly important. So, if you need to spread the sessions out a little more, don't argue with it. It's all about taking good care of ourselves.

Glad you're back!

I did my Callanetics this morning and tonight I feel SUPER bloated and big around the middle. This has made me feel particularly gross because my stomach is usually pretty flat and bloating paired with thicker legs makes me feel really chunky. I'm not just a little bloated, I actually look like my stomach is swollen - as if I'm pregnant!

I've heard of this happening and soon the stomach flattens itself again. But after just one session!? Maybe it's just something I ate today... Anyone else experience this SO quickly?

Feeling a bit less bloated today but still quite mushy. Completed my second session and felt it especially in the hip and butt which is good!

I feel like the standing leg exercises put a lot of strain on my knees though. Usually during something like squats your knees are not supposed to go past your toes, so wouldn't that be the same for this exercise?

I'm going to take tomorrow off to rest and then do another session on Sunday.

I suspect the bloating is food related. Callanetics pushes things towards the gut, but not in a way that feel bloated or pregnant. I'd say the biggest increase I had was maybe 1.5" - 2", but I didn't feel that way, I just didn't fit in my pants the same way.

I don't know which video you're working with, but with the 10/10 there's not a lot of standing leg exercises, not like in Evo. If you can be more specific, then maybe someone can help you with that.

Yes I suspect it was food related as well.

I'm using 10 in 10, so the first standing leg exercise is with the heels together, dropping an inch and curling the pelvis up and repeating. The second is like plie squat with heels together.

When doing these exercises, I really feel it in the knees. It's not a searing pain or anything, but it burns enough for me to be concerned about whether it's healthy for the knees or not in the long term.

The pelvic scoops and pelvic circles also seem quite hard on the knees.

I have to add I've downloaded the original 10 in 10 book for kindle and had a read, and in the book the standing leg exercises are done with feet slightly apart. Would this be a better modification do you think?

Oh! Okay. Actually they're very healing for the knees (they healed mine), but you might need to do the beginner's version.

This means doing the pliés and squats with your feet apart, possibly with your heels down at first (you'll have to determine what you're okay with). You'll slowly bring yourself up onto your toes when you're ready, then bring your feet closer together as you get stronger.

For the pelvic scoops, you can do them in a higher position (where you feel comfortable), getting lower as you get stronger. Depending on your issues, you might want to put a small rolled towel under your ankles, making it smaller as time goes on, to eventually not need it anymore.

I've only been doing waist bends, and standing leg pulses, and arm exercises. I'm hoping to find AM/PM tonight and do that. It's really gentle iirc

Thank you for the advice!

That's my 3rd session done after having the weekend off. I found this session harder but I think that's because I'm working deeper into the muscle and I've been really focusing on making my pulses small, relaxed and controlled.

The hip exercise with my leg bent I can REALLY feel. With the leg straight out though, not so much. But I think this is because my leg feels very heavy in that position and I'm not properly strong enough to even pulse yet. Once I develop a bit more strength I think I'll be fine.

I've not noticed much physical change yet (although it's only been 3 sessions so I'm not expecting much yet) although I THINK things are shifting about because my lower tummy and love-handle area are getting a bit more wobbly. It might just be my imagination though, who knows.

I know it's only been 3 sessions BUT I couldn't help myself, I cracked out the measuring tape and measured my legs and hips (I didn't do my waist or lower stomach because I take those measurements in the morning before I've eaten and they wouldn't give an accurate measurement right now).

SO I expected nothing to have changed, but it seems things are moving about! I've GAINED a quarter of an inch on my mid-thigh (although I don't mind because I've happy that things are changing) so I'm now 21 inches, LOST a quarter of an inch off of my upper thigh (the widest part) so that's 22 inches, and LOST a quarter of an inch off my hips, which is now 36.25 inches! My calves and knees have stayed the same but I don't mind.

May I also add that I've gained a pound in weight, but that stuff fluctuates all the time.

Probably won't be able to help myself in the morning again and will take my waist measurement...

OKAY so these are my measurements after only 3 sessions (I say sessions because with 10 in 10 after all the explanations and credits etc, it's really only about 45 minutes).

Arm: 10.5 (no change)
Bust: 33.75 (-0.25)
Under bust: 28.5 (-0.5)
Waist: 26 (-0.5)
Lower abs: 32.25 (-0.5)
Hips: 36 (-0.5)
Upper thigh: 21.5 (-0.75)
Thigh: 20.75 (no change)
Knee: 14.75 (-0.25)
Calf: 14.5 (no change)

This is with NO weight loss.

Would like to see a bit of inch loss on my middle thighs but I can't complain at those numbers after only 3 sessions!

I did 75 waist bends each side, 50 standing side lifts, and 50 standing behind lifts.
I'm going to go dig out AM/PM today!
Thank you Jiggle! <3

Thanks, Jiggle

Another session done today. I meant to do one yesterday as well but I had a terrible sleep the night before and just didn't feel up to it.

I found that today the stomach exercises were REALLY killer. I can go up higher now but could only do about 15 pulses before having to take a breather and start again!

Hey Ouida!

cowshedder, I also wanted to say, gentle on the ab exercises. I don't know if you are, but it seems like you're trying to make yourself feel like they're working, when, in fact, you want to be doing the opposite i.e. you want to be able to do the pulses with all the muscles relaxed, which is actually possible, believe it or not. Don't worry about getting higher. You're going to end up higher naturally as you get stronger. I'd say focus on learning to relax everything, rather than getting higher. So if you had to stop after 15, is that because you could feel it in any other area of your body, like your back for instance? If so, then it's just too high for where you're at.

Hey Everyone

I hope that are all doing well and pulsing away Sorry for the delayed activity. This year has been busy. I'm so grateful that I started discipling myself towards practicing Callanetics. My circumstances this year have allowed no room for "traditional" or other forms of exercise but for Callanetics and walking. I also think that FINALLY,all of the stop and starts are paying off. I've lost weight - in fact, I'm weighing around the same as I did when I was 16 and got a shock when I measured my waist the other day. What surprised me about my weight, is that I don't look "skinny". If anything, Im starting to appear more proportionate. My body is starting to shift into the shifts that going to place things in the right spot! Yay!

So, to all of you, whenever you feel like quitting - don't! It's worth it to stay the course. You'll feel better, look better and you will be preserving your health. Something that can't be said for some other forms of exercise.

@cowshedder
Callanetics is the program that will shape your body unlike anything else, and it is something that you can do at any stage of your life and in any circumstance. I found that the quicker you get puffy, the quicker the result. Actually, the better the result once the puff has been deflated.

@cowshedder
Callanetics is the program that will shape your body unlike anything else, and it is something that you can do at any stage of your life and in any circumstance. I found that the quicker you get puffy, the quicker the result. Actually, the better the result once the puff has been deflated.

Have a fantastic week!
Great news!

Hey @Partyof8 and @Jigglebuster!

I tried something new last night. I did Callanetics in the bath. Part of me were light, but my goal was to see if I could identify the muscles I wasn't relaxing when I did my abs, and it worked fabulously. Now I can use this information in future sessions. Looking forward to it!

And don't worry, i took time to just relax and have my bath.

Good to see you're still at it fit4eva!

I read elsewhere that Callanetics is filming new DVDs in LA today! Can't wait to see what they are like.

Hey Donna! Long time no see! Are you still pulsing away?

Oh they are finally doing it, eh? That's great! From what I understand, Callan was a big part of creating the new series before she passed away. I'll keep my eye open for it.

Thanks for the tip!

@anyone in general

Which Callanetics videos are using at the moment? I've been sticking to 10 in 10 for the last few months.

I do a 10/10 Super integrated thing, with a splash of Evo for certain moves.

It's spring! I'm so looking forward to getting outside again. I've discovered that the lowish ceiling fans in this place are what have been deterring me, although I get past it. The awkward warm-up having to watch out as I reach up, is not happy making. So... outside will happen soon!
