Oh, Sandy..that is a great idea going down on your way to Texas..I know she will appreciate it. Maybe she will feel like a Texas visit sometime during the winter, too..I am betting she has a good support system in Tulsa, too, so that will be a big help..So sad..

Hair dye on..Think I will go to the store today..Not totally sure what I'm having on Christmas Day for veggies, so it might be corn..Brenda is bringing the broccoli salad and Sarah is going to make sweet potatoes and I'm doing hash brown casserole..

Baby kitty Lewis looked like he was enjoying the Christmas tree at his new home.

My niece, Lindsey, made a video for the hospital they were in for Zia's surgery..Panama City
is a very sophisticated place and the hospital is an adjunct of John Hopkins, so they know what they are doing..

Well, shower time..

Hugs to my friends....

Just checking in with my fellow elves.

Sandy, did your brotherinlaw take any decongestants not knowing he had high blood pressure?

Brisket is in the oven. 5-6 hours cooking, then cooling, then slicing and freezing for Christmas Day.

Thanks for looking at Lindsey's video. She is adorable. They are big surfer people and live on the beach in a nice home they built. They have a wonderful community of friends.

I just bought a new blood pressure monitor. I loaned my other to DD who got high BP as soon as she got pregnant. And she's still monitoring it, so I just got another one.
Despite losing weight and quitting most drinking, my BP is high. So I have to monitor and report to my doctor. Sandy's brother in-law is making me take it more seriously.

DH (as happens this time of year) ate a little off plan. (Gifts from well-meaning friends) of higher carb cakes and candies. If you don't eat reliably low carb, you've got to guess how much insulin.
He was SO low this morning I nearly called an ambulance.
After an hour I got him back, but it took a longer time than usual.
He's okay. I knew what I was getting into. Still hard and reinforces low carb being best for us.

Oh Judy, why did he go low? Too much insulin? My friend was given a sliding scale and she adjusts accordingly. Like I did with kitty Alex. Poor Bowe...glad he is okay.

Brisket tasted marvelous. I'm not in love with smoked brisket. This is moist and delicious with a real beefy taste.

You are exactly right he "guessed" and took to much insulin.
If a type 1 eats low carb and only low carb, it's much easier to dose.
He nearly always eats low carb, so when he doesn't eat low carb, he must guess how many carbs he ate and how much insulin he should take for that.
Guessing is obviously the problem.
He guessed wrong.

Dr. Bernstein advocates a low carb diet so type ones don't end up "dead in bed".
It's almost impossible to guess.

It's been very unusual for him to go THAT low very often since he really adopted a low carb diet.

My mom used to cook a brisket all day if company was coming. It sounds good to me in my memory.

Good Morning!

Judy...scary situation with your husband's BS numbers. So glad you know how to handle it and get him back to normal.

I went off the rails yesterday at my husband's Christmas party. A few cookies and a piece of fudge....ugh. I didn't feel well last night...big surprise. Doh! Back on strict LC today for me.

Today will feature some reading and just taking it easy. Took the morning off boot camp as my knees were "barking" a bit from too much jumping during the boot camp sessions the past 2 days. We have a nice mat floor that helps with impact, but still the jumping gets to me sometimes.

Wishing you all happy holidays. Don't let the stress of the season steal the joy.

I have no idea what my BIL took before all this happened. He was aware that he had high BP but refused to go back to the Dr after the Dr made him wait too long for his appt. That was over 14 years ago!! Plus, he was a heavy drinker that got even heavier the last year or so. There is a lot of anger mixed with the grief of his family because of his actions that led to his death. They are all scheduled to go to some family grief counseling sometime soon.

Oh my, Judy. That sounds so scary!!! I'm so glad you were able to get him leveled out. Are you on meds for high BP? Yes, please watch it closely!! I lost my little brother when he was in his early 40s to high BP also. It's a terrible disease that lets you forget it's there just waiting to pounce.

We're off to visit DH's mother today. I'm taking her some shrimp, potato salad and cole slaw. That was always our traditional Christmas Eve meal with them before she had her stroke almost 20 years ago. I'm sure she'll love it.

Have a great day everybody.

Judy I'm so sorry for the scare. Is he amiable to LC?

Sandy I'm sorry about your BIL. That is so hard for a family to watch and be helpless.

The boys are well. Lewis weighs 3.1 pounds. I asked the vet when we can neuter him as I think he has at least 5 testicles! Vet said he has to be 5 pounds so we will weigh weekly!

Hi ladies..

Gosh, Judy, a little extra insulin goes a long way... It is hard to figure out. In cat land, I never dosed Alex unless he was over 150 and it was 7-12 hours after his last dose. Then it was a tiny amount. Because, he had a low carb diet, he was pretty consistent. It is all about the food.

Gary cleaned my oven this am while Scarlet and I were shopping. He even took the door off and scrubbed away. He is a thorough cleaner.

Lewis hung around those horses too long... he thinks he is a thoroughbred kitten.

Oh, Sandy, our health is do precarious. I'm sure they are angry about his neglect. Glad they are going to counseling.

The nice part about LC is that you can get right back on it, Lori.

Hugs all around. Going to make some spritz cookies with my mom's spritz cookie maker.

Cindy yes, he's been far more low carb since I've started reading the Dr. Bernstein FB page to him, I guess around a year ago. I make plenty of treats and nearly always cook at home (all low carb) and as far as I can tell, it may have made him more insulin sensitive.
So when he goes off the reservation, that big guess in dosing sometimes goes south.

He always apologizes, then I feel worse! LOL

Carolyn you could not be more correct - it is ALL about the food. And it's a lot to ask of a person to be as rigorous as Dr. B who rarely varies his food and amounts. But he's usually quite disciplined.

Sandy that's gotta be a bitter pill to know how much he contributed to his early death. Counseling sounds like a great thing for them. I actually have a friend who's a Christian grief counselor.
I do take medication for my bp. Even though I've lost weight, I think it's gone up. I can't remember what I've told you all and what I haven't - just bought another BP cuff to check for myself and will campaign for more or different medication if necessary.
I don't want to have a stroke... Bowe would be a horrible caretaker.

So happy you got to have baby kitties for Christmas, Cindy!

I do think that eating low carb does make you more insulin sensitive. Pardon using my cat as example, but his insulin needs went way down as he lowcarbed. We all go off the reservation...(love that term).... and sometimes we go into the Casino. (OK joke).

There are so many bp meds. Best wishes.

I made some spritz cookies. They didn't look like the pictures, but were okay.

Spritz can be tricky. They have to stick to the pan but come cleanly off the cookie press.

I resurrected Pooter's old heating pad. It was on continuously for over 4 years. Leonard is thin coated and was shivering even though the house is 70 degrees. It took him 7 seconds to find it.

Where's Karen?

Oh I thought using a cat was a perfect example.
I realize they are true carnivores and we are omnivores, but the example of having given them cereals and little protein and then turning them into diabetics is still a match.

Cindy that 's funny but I bet true - 7 seconds to find the heating pad!

Agree with Cindy regarding the spritz cookies. Dear Cookie: Please stick HERE and do not stick HERE. Pretty tough. And Christmasy.

Baking and cooking today. Furiously. BUT WITH LOVE!

New to this forum

Good morning! My name is Lesa and I am new to this forum.
I am on a couple of KETO type facebook pages.

I am looking for less "get skinny, dieting" type interaction, and more "this is the way I live" kind of discussions.

I do need to lose some more weight, but so far I have lost about 165 pounds. I have just come off of a very restrictive (Ideal Protein) Ketosis style diet. (I had reached my goal) but as soon as I added a minimum of carbs and fats, I gained pounds very quickly.

I have been struggling to get those 15 pounds back off, to put me back in the range I want to maintain. However, I it doesn't have to be a sprint. I am ok with it taking some time. I have started exercising more, and don't want to eat at such a caloric deficit that I can't work out.

I am looking forward to getting to know you guys!

Hi Lesa!

I'm going to answer quickly because I might be snowed under with Christmas prep.

I am astounded at your fantastic weight loss. Many congratulations.

I lost about 30 (maybe it's a tad more now?) with EFGT/keto and so did my skinny sister. After a couple of years without changing the way we ate, we both gained 5/10 pounds.

One of our friends on this board, Sandy, started trying out "Fast 5". I thought, after all I've been through, a lifetime of EVERY single different method, I am NOT starving myself. Well, Sandy got back down to the 130s and still maintains her active cute figure with Fast 5 - it even allows her some extra carbs whenever she wants.

Google Fast 5 and you'll find a free e-book and about a 15-minute (excruciating) video of the doctor who devised it.

It is NOT starving, but it does delay eating and confines it to a 5-hour window.
I find if I continue low carb, it's super easy.

Anyway, it was the intermittent fasting (Fast 5) that got me back down to my original weight loss. Plus I have had more cheats this year than in the previous 4 years combined, so IF-ing (Fast 5) works well for me. I can LIVE with that.

My skinny sister had high fasting blood glucose after a lifetime of hypoglycemia and was headed to type 2 despite being fairly active and thin. Even eating low carb didn't "fix" her. The IF-ing dropped her fasting blood glucose to 89 and she's hoping it will forestall a diagnosis of type 2. It might be that she's damaged herself so much she'll still get the diagnosis (her A1c was mildly high), but we'll see.

Fast 5 isn't necessary quick weight loss. But I do not starve and I am easily able to limit my intake of food this way.
But I weigh 8 pounds fewer than I weighed this time last year after I just started LC/Fast 5.

That's my quick advice. Wonderful friends on here and we look forward to getting to know you! Merry Christmas!

Judy

Hi Lesa, I am on the beer, pizza and Captain Crunch diet so don't listen to anything I say!

Managed to run today. 2 miles. Goal is 4 times a week. I run outside so I want it at least 30 degrees with no wind.

Did I tell you girls I got a Nespresso coffee/espresso machine? Love that thing! It came with a milk heater/frother. Much better than Keurig.

Just ordered a heated throw for Leonard as Lewis commandeered the heating pad!

I stayed at a friend's home who had a Nespresso machine.
It is incredible, I agree.
We've never had a Keurig. We make pots of coffee and it didn't make sense for us, plus the Keurig coffee we'd tasted didn't taste very good to us.

HOWEVER I bought a fancy, old-school thing I probably won't be strong enough to use in 10 years. It's called an Aero Press. It's sort of like a French press, but not.

You mix ground coffee in one piece with NOT boiling water (I am starting to think that is the key to this). They give you the specific degree and I can't remember it because I know how much water how long in my microwave.

You pour the not boiling water into the grounds, stir, and after about a minute, use a plunge to push the water through the grinds into your heated cup below. It has a tiny filter in it the size of a big communion wafer.

It is hands down THE best cup of coffee I've had. No bitterness, super rich. It's like an espresso shot (or 3), but you add water to taste. And that might be called an Americano, but I'd have to study up on that. It has RUINED me for the pot of coffee. DH has that all to himself, now.

Anyway, congrats on your Nespresso! I got the cheaper version, LOL.

Alex loved his kitty cube. He lived in it. It was all fluff inside and when I picked him up out of it, he was like a furnace. Maybe the twins need a kitty cube. Kitties are desert animals. Love the heat!!! How fun!!

Yeah, for your Nespresso. It looks amazing. I got Beth a heated milk frother for Christmas.

The key to good coffee is the temp. Just off the boil is right. So last year I bought myself a coffeemaker that gets the water to the right temp. But, I so love my French Press, too. I'll look up your Aero press.

Welcome, Lesa...

Hugs all around....

I'm going to borrow my sister's French press and see if I like the taste as well.
It sure would be easier!

Good Morning!

Love all the coffee talk. I am an addict! I have a Senseo pod brewer and really like that. My husband doesn't drink coffee, so no point in making a big pot, although now that I'm retired, I drink quite a bit more. The French press has always intrigued me, but have never tried one.

Judy, your description of Fast 5 and what it has done for you really makes me want to give it another go. My weight has crept up about 5 lbs and it doesn't want to budge. Sigh...time to grab the bull by the horns, I'm thinking.

I'm off to boot camp in a few minutes for session #4 for the week. The studio is closed next week, so this will be it for awhile.

Congratulations Lesa on your amazing weight loss. Fantastic!

Merry Christmas to all.....enjoy the time with family and friends!

Lori I remember I started it because I just wanted to stop gaining.
I was resigned to my weight because I thought I was eating properly, and I was. Very low carb, moderate protein and not afraid of fat, but not adding it.

I just ate too much too often.

Occasionally being hungry turned out to be good. Haha
I subscribe to free newsletters from Dr. Jason Fung who's written a book about fasting. The newsletters are good enough for me. But they do a good job of explaining the mechanism if you're interested.

Good to know we have another coffee person.

Merry Christmas, friends!

Hi All, and welcome Lesa

So sorry for being absent. My son had a hospitalization and sitting with him wrecked my back so I've been a little "under the weather" but feeling better now....finally.

I've missed so much conversation I read all your posts this morning. You are all so warm, caring, & fun. I've missed you.

Sandy's family has been in my thoughts and prayers daily. So hard!!! And Carolyn your little niece is doing well I hope. And Judy, your husband's Blood Sugar scare.........wowzers!!! We all had a lot happening that week. Hopefully that is behind us.

Lori....what is under the grandkids tree? You were having such a hard time with that shopping, what did you get them??

OK you cat and coffee lovers...........you must have a different genetic code than me. I think coffee smells like a baby's diaper. When I was young I used to make my mom put coffee in the trunk of the car after a grocery shopping trip because I would gag if it was in a bag in the back seat of the car For me it is all about tea...

Ok...confession time.........my "window" has been wide open for the last week, curtains flapping in the breeze...yikes!. Chex mix, cookies, and then my mom sent me her wonderful fruit cake (yes, I like fruitcake....it is a fruit you know ) and I have an invitation to a friends house for hot chocolate and more cookies ...So, I'm totally off the wagon. Sugar has won!!!!! But the calendar is almost ready to turn to January and everyone seems to return to the panic of paying for their food sins so I'm resigned to enjoy these last few festive food days then get back on the "Window Closed" trek. I really do like the window being closed but this has been a total challenge during the holidays. I'll be happy if my weigh-in on January 1st is without a gain.

Judy, I never did get to try your cookie recipes but I printed them and will give them a try when all the sugar cookies are out of the house. Thanks for sharing. January 1st what ever is in the house is going to be bird food.

And my exercise tape arrived about two weeks ago and I REALLY, REALLY like it so I'm pumped about that!!!!! Essentrics Pain-Relief Workout with Miranda & Sahra Esmonde-White....the first 30 minute workout I have been able to do without pain in over ten years....yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Sandy....I've lost track of your leave date...are you on the road yet?

And Cindy....I can totally identify with your Captain Crunch & pizza diet (I don't do alcohol, I would have iced tea). Actually that sounds sooooooooo good right now. We will be having pizza this week, part of our holiday tradition food. And for Christmas we always order from Victoria's, a marvelous Italian restaurant that does the BEST Italian Eggplant on the planet. Since all our family is out of state we order take out on Christmas Eve and enjoy it for Christmas Eve and Christmas day. No cooking for this gal, haaa, and hardly any dishes. My son came up with that tradition about 15 years ago and I look forward to it every year.

Getting long here....hugs to all.

Good Morning!

Well, the big day is nearly here! It will all be over in a flash of ribbons & paper soon. We are off to our daughter's today and will have dinner and spend the night. Home Christmas afternoon and then off to a birthday party for the youngest grandson who turns 8 on Sunday. The kids are getting clothes, games, books from their Grandparents(us). Our daughter was going to pick out bicycles for us to get them, but that has fallen through. She said she just couldn't pull it together.? Whatever, in the Spring, we'll see that they get bicycles.

Judy, I am familiar with Jason Fung and follow his blog and have his book. I just need to put all of this fasting stuff into practice! I did make it until 10AM yesterday, so that's a start. I also stayed very LC. We had pizza and subs last night and I scraped the toppings off the pizza and dumped the sub into a bowl. I try.

Karen...hope your son is doing ok after his hospitalization. Don't worry about your open window and flapping curtains. You will get it under control in the New Year...no doubt. Glad you like the new exercise routine....any movement is good!

Sorry for not more personals. It is early and I'm still working on my first cup of coffee. Not awake yet!

Enjoy your Holidays!

Hi....

So sorry about your son.. hope you both are doing better.

Scarlet and I went with Brett and Sarah to Sing...adorable kid movie. Scarlet's family goes to her Aunts tonight after mass at 8, and they eat and stay up until midnight, then they do some singing. She is from a Mexican family. Fun traditions.

Beth won't be here until 11:30 pm tomorrow. We will go to church, then open presents. Then

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you; You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about."

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:8-20

Merry Christmas Everyone !

Loved that Karen! Thank you.

It's a little late, but Merry Christmas everybody. I love you all!! We're all packed except the fridge stuff and are pulling out in the morning. Please remember us in your prayers for a safe trip for us and for all our friends and family to stay well here at home too.

Thank you all for your friendship!

Hi everyone..

We may see Sandy on the road to Texas...I'll love for a RV..(among the millions).

Had a super time with Brett/Sarah, Beth/Shawn, and Glen/Brenda (Gary's brother and gorgeous wife). All seemed to like Sarah a lot and she seemed to like them..So that is
good..

Beth bought the Champagne Cake for dessert...It was amazingly wonderful. I had one
small piece and gave the rest away..I know I would have eaten the whole thing.

One thing we learned at church as Linus was telling the Christmas Story was when he reads, "Fear not"..he tosses his precious blanket on the floor..I never saw that, but our pastor
mentioned it. We are called not to fear..

Got some fun gifts..A new lc cookbook..I think I'll put Jason Fung's book on audible, if I can find it..I do need to start a Fasting program and only lowcarb food..

Beth says that Paleo/low carb food is all the rage at Whole Foods..(except for the bakery).
She is going to have a gal demonstrate the InstantPot on..

Judy...read the instructions..I didn't..Sarah made nommie sweet potatoes and they needed to cook on low on the slow cook setting..Duh..I had to look it up. The adjust button adjusts
the slow cooker part to low medium and high. So they turned out perfect. I think the adjust button works for Saute, too..

Hugs to my friends...We are heading to Houston/and then will be back on Thursday as Beth
and Sarah are coming back, spending the night, then heading to meet his college buddies.
The good thing is that they are spending time together to get to know each other a bit better, which we think is great..Then they are going to stay at his sisters (in separate rooms..Beth asked).
