No Drinking Challenge

The no drinking thread seems to have disappeared . . . so I am starting a new one here. I am getting a jump start before January 1 (so trite). I see this as a low carb challenge, too --at least for me, alcohol seems to nearly always be what gives me the shove off the low carb wagon. I prefer this not to be a place where people talk about their favorite alcohol drinks, or about drinking in moderation. If we stumble we are still welcome because we still need support, but the goal is still no alcohol.

Whatcha think?

I need to join this challenge. I love my nightly drink but I know it is probably what is slowing my weightloss down.

I'll start Jan 1 as we have bubbly for New Years Eve. Somehow hubby have gotten into a Saturday ritual of a few drinks. That leads to a lot of snacks! I'm aiming for no drinks until our Feb anniversary.

Yippee, lots of fellow travelers.
I am aiming for this to be day one for me.
Nothing planned for new years, so that should be easy as long as I don't bring anything into the house. I half expect a gift bottle of wine on new year's eve, but if so I will give thanks and tactfully regift it to an appropriate recipient.

Oh, Patience thank you, I was looking for that thread myself. Definitely count me in!

I've discovered that I need to give up alcohol. Lots of reasons but yes, it bumps me off the low carb wagon (in my case, I try to eat as close to keto as possible so I've got less wiggle room in terms of carbs), I have a real problem with ummm, let's say "moderation" (a/k/a, "one isn't enough but twelve is too many" syndrome), and I've discovered that now alcohol of any sort, wine included, triggers my IBS and I've just recovered from the most gawd-awful week of my life, I don't want to go through that again. I just need to stay away from alcohol, period.

So I haven't had a drop since December 21 (remarkable what a motivator searing pain can be). Oddly enough, when I made the decision that "nope, not gonna have any at all" it was mentally easier than thinking, "well, maybe I can have one occasionally". Right up there with smoking in a way.

I can't remember when I've gone more than 3 weeks without drinking anything ... two years, maybe? Kind of embarrassing when I see it written out like that.

Hubby has kindly offered to pick up a bottle of sparkling juice of some sort for New Years, frankly, I plan on being asleep! I stopped participating in New Years celebrations in my late 20s, just don't do well with my sleep patterns messed up.

Here's to a happy, healthy and abstinent 2017 for all of us!!!

I just started what I hope is a lengthy period of abstinence . . . your December 21 sounds great to me, on day 1. Keep on!

I am out today dealing with car repair, but will check in later.

Oh, I would win this challenge, hands down. LOL Definitely not a drinker. I drank enough in my younger days to carry me through. I wish I could get turned off to food as easily and I got turned off to booze.

Good luck to all of you!

Thanks for your good wishes, Carol.
See you next year, Finding Me -- (next week that is).
I am just on day 2 so your 3 days sounds good to me.

Got my bearings replaced on my vehicle.
I had chili for lunch (beans are not on WOE), but no alcohol or sugar.
So I am satisfied with my day.
Catch you all later . . . . .

Okay, today is Day 1 of no alcohol for me. I'm off work this one more day. I have a stressful job and had gotten into the habit of drinking every night after work. Plus my husband is a drinker and is constantly trying to get me to join him. It REALLY messes up my weight and metabolism, so I know I need to stop.

My initial goal is to have NO alcohol until I lose my weight (which is about 12 lbs.).

Hopefully we will all come on here and talk about what substitutes work etc. I think I'll be okay if I make tea in the evenings.

Stress at work is a problem, for sure. A good part of my drinking is of the self medicating variety.

My challenge is first to nix the drinking and then have a strategy for when I get to the "one doesn't matter" stage. That works for me for a while, but always leads slowly but surely to greater frequency and quantity.

My subs tend to be coffee and carbonated waters. Too much coffee not so good but that is my first go-to. Not getting thirsty is a good strategy, so I need to get back to drinking more plain water. I find if I make myself chug some first thing in the morning, that helps. I am trying to up my herbal teas, too, I have a ton in the cupboard. They do double duty as a non-caffeinated drink and welcome warmth in the winter time. Sometimes it helps to make the tea supping a bit of a pleasant ritual, such as with a few pages from a favorite book, or quiet wind down just before bed. Broths are good liquid subs, too.

Good reports, Mick and Maria. I am good for today, too, knock-wood.

Patience - Thanks. You are doing great!

Mick - Way to go! Weekends are the hardest for sure.

Maria - I know how tough it is to abstain after a stressful day and then having a spouse drinking in front of you is the worst, but you can do it!

I had a successful Day 1 into my Dry January. And the weather is horrible with nothing in the house so Day 2 is looking promising, too.

Today is my Day 1 and I'm having my evening craving. My husband is drinking a beer and watching football. I am drinking a seltzer water. I'm going to keep drinking water until 8:00 p.m., then make tea and go to my bedroom to start re-reading The Dukan Diet book.

I took all of the unopened wine bottles from the refrigerator and put them on the wine rack. Since I prefer my wine chilled, I'm less likely to open them at room temperature. I also have two bottles of Hard Cider left. Hopefully my husband will drink them up so they won't be there to tempt me for long.

I'm restarting my workout routine, so hopefully a few evening workouts will help keep my mind off of wanting alcohol. I hope to go two months!

I am still good after about a week in the challenge.

I had a brief craving just a short while ago, it was a fleeting one that I was able to recognize for what it was and smash it.

Stay strong everyone and check in when you can.

I have been alcohol for about three weeks. My biggest obstacle is not having a drink when I go out to eat. It's such a habit to have a margarita or mixed drink with my dinner. It's only been a few weeks but I've noticed my belly isn't bloated now I just need the scale to start dropping.

I'm also involved with a 100 day, losin' da booze challenge. I want to see if I can go more than 138 days, like I did last year!

As for my way of eating, I am back on Calorie Restricting with Optimal Nutrition. We'll see how that goes, too.

I'd like to join this challenge! Alcohol messes with my weight loss efforts...I usually drink to relax on my night off but I'm finding alternatives--like hot baths etc. I would like to finish January completely dry!

Good job everyone! What is everyone doing in place of alcohol? I see Stella mentioned a hot bath. I've been doing real well making hot tea in the evenings when I would normally have wine. Sometimes I put seltzer water with a lime wedge in a wine glass.

I've been walking or some form of exercise. It is a mental thing for me because if I do something good for myself I don't want to undo it. Alcohol seems to be the biggest obstacle with weight loss for me.

Great job everyone and welcome to the new folks!

Maria - Great plans! The only way I can make this work for me is to not have it in the house. Luckily, I'm happily divorced so I don't have to deal with someone else constantly drinking in front of me. I have been going to bed earlier this week, too, but I didn't sleep very much last night...I think that was more about things on my mind and not the lack of alcohol though.

I've been struggling this week because I also gave up coffee the 2nd day (Monday) so it has been a humdinger of a week with all that and getting back on strict low carb. And yesterday, I had a really stressful family thing that I'm required to do weekly and usually, if I don't have any booze in the house, I stop by one of MANY liquor stores on my way home to de-stress. BUT, I kept my eyes on the road in front of me and focused on getting home without making any stops. Yay! I'm not feeling great either so it may be the carb flu or a combo of it all or I'm actually getting sick because my throat is feeling weird or starting menopause...IDK. My body is cray cray on a good day lately.

So, ANYWAY, I'm in the middle of Day 5 of Dry January. Sorry for the long check in, but glad I got that off my chest.

Have a great rest-of-the-week!

I was soooooo tempted to have a drink last night. I was at a birthday party and everyone was having a few drinks except for myself. It would've been so easy to have just one (which would've led to several) but I stuck to my guns and it felt great. There isn't any guilt this morning about sabotaging myself.
