Help for a Coffee Novice

Hey- I know that I am for surely addicted to caffeine. I am not overly concerned about it - it would be better if I did not have any, but right now I need to concentrate on getting my eating right, rather than the caffeine issue.

The problem is, my caffeine source is 100% diet pop. (OK, I'm from Ohio. In Ohio, it's pop. I know elsewhere, it's soda, or soda pop. Just one of those local vocabulary things.) It's not the caffeine I am worried about, it's all of the chemicals and acids that I am putting into myself. (I am especially concerned about acids being neutralized by calcium, potentially leading to bone loss.)

So I wanted to try some coffee, and I never really have been a coffee fan. I honestly haven't really given it a chance. My wife has a Keurig, and it seems easy enough. But when I go to the store, all I can find on the labels for K-Cups is: coffee, arabica coffee, and natural flavors. So there is no real calorie count, carbohydrate count, protein count - nothing. So I need help to make sure I don't do something stupid...

I am assuming the coffee, or arabica coffee, is pretty much zero across all macronutrients. Is that right? But what about "natural flavors"? That could be anything? A cup of sugar is a natural flavor, for example; obviously that is not what I want.

So please, set me straight! Thanks you all!

I'm not sure about the Keurig cups (I grind whole beans and drip my coffee), but the flavored coffees I buy have no calories or carbs--somehow the flavor is produced in the beans without any sugar. I've checked with manufacturers on this issue.

I've been drinking this coffee heavily for years with no problems.

If a coffee has sugar added it has to have a nutritional label on it.
K-cups that have sugar do have labels on the box showing the info.
Most flavored ground or whole bean coffee have flavor oils added, so they have no added carbs.
Some instant coffees (like Nescafe Ola) have a small amount of added sugar (the Nescafe one has burnt sugar to give it a specific taste, it's really good too lol).
Powdered flavored coffees like General Foods/Maxwell House International Coffee, have quite a bit of sugar, even the sugar free options have quite a few carbs.

Hope that helps_

Welcome Spaceace,
In the south we call it Coke. Doesn't matter if it is Coke or Pepsi it is all Coke. Anyway, I too was a diet Coke addict. I gave it up April of 2015. I can honestly say I haven't missed it. I replaced it with water. I have my one cup of coffee first thing in the morning and occasionally will have a cup during the day. My best advice I can give you is just stick with it. It will be hard at first but if you can replace it with water instead of a caffeinated beverage in the end you will feel so much better.

Spaceace, this has got to be my number one issue after eating. I am a diet pop junky. I can't even imagine not having it. In fact, I don't like to think about it, hahaha. I am always wondering if I should do a soda machine and add my own flavorings and if that would be better and give me that fizzy pop drink I want and love so much?

I love fizzy drinks--but I don't do sweeteners at all--even the artificial ones.

So I drink either LaCroix or Dasani---both are flavored enough to provide satisfaction (for me) but have no sweeteners at all.

I like both of these sparking waters too, but I replaced my soda (Coca Cola) with ICE flavored sparkling water. It does have artificial sweeteners, but those haven't seemed to have a negative effect on my health or weight loss up to this point (knock on wood).

Once I feel I have a firm grip on maintaining my weight loss long term, I may move towards eliminating AS, but for now it's the lesser of two (sweet) evils.
