Why did you quit Deborah? I am SO frustrated with retaining so much fluid. I had PMMD when I was not on BCP and I feel like Ihave been in BAD PMS for 2 months
again I am back up to 150 over night for no reason!
I don't even CARE about how I look with this gain..I hate what it does to my brain

I have been on bioidentical estrogen and progesterone for about 9.5 years. Of course I don't know what it would be like to stop, since I haven't, so really can't offer a comparison at this point.

What I will say is that over the 9.5 year period, doctor has made adjustments to doses that make big differences. As an example, I started having horrible difficulty staying asleep a couple years ago. An upward adjustment to progesterone made a world of difference and my sleep got monumentally better. We have made other tweaks along the way based on symptoms, blood work, or both. I am also told by my hairdresser (of 15+ years) that my hair is not thinning as much as other women. I'm guessing that may have to do with the hormones.

I am also on thyroid hormone replacement (Naturethroid).

I think the hardest part is finding the right doctor. And then mine had the audacity to retire in December!!! I have an appointment with a new one in May (recommended by the compounding pharmacy where I get my hormone creams) and my fingers are crossed this will be a good fit.

Good luck as you work through all this!

thank you Lizzy! I am a Lizzie actually. Don't see our name often
Very good information. I am being hit hard by menopause and really it started when my mom was in hospital. I had 'hormones like a teenager in Sept. Now I am in latter end of menopause already but feel like I went to bed in Sept normal and woke up in December in pain and stiffness and brain fog. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue labels on me but haven't felt the symptoms until this last month and a 1/2. I too have thyroid disease-had a full thyroidectomy at 42 and have been on armor for years and actually it regulated my periods for years (PCOS) so I have an appt. Tuesday with a bio doc that helped me 20 years ago with my Fibro/fatigue diagnosis and hopefully he can help me again.

Good luck at your upcoming doc appointment Lizzie. I hope the doc has some great ideas about how to work with your hormones! I don't believe I've experienced any downside from bioidenticals, so if that is an option, perhaps worth a try!

I am in the exacts same place as you aim! Same struggle with weight, I've been going from 150 - 156 for the past 6 months, I am down to 147 but it's taken me 3 months to lose that, where I was always around 138 for past 5 years. I used to be able to knock out 5 lbs of bloat with low carb in 3 days, but no more

My peri meno symptoms are the same, bloating fluid retention like crazy, sore tender breasts. I don't get night sweats, but the other symptoms make me irritable to heck!
My primary, won't test my hormones, as I do still get a period, I went without for 6 months, then 1 dec and then again in Feb she says it's a waste of time, as they will fluctuate daily - she did give me a diuretic for bloating, it's given me a little bit of relief but not much.
Hormones are such a crapshoot to get to your optimal levels, she offered to put me on the mini pill, basically Hrt, but that can make symptoms worse.

Saying all that - low carb, mainly protein and veg including lots of green leafy veg, no dairy, no sugar, no alcohol, low sodium, really helps, but it's a pretty boring miserable existence! Sometimes I say to heck with it, but it results in a 5 lb gain, that takes weeks to get off!

I do a lot of protein shakes, with berries, greens and MCT oil, as I know they don't bloat me out.
I am debating spending the $$ for a hormone doc, as insurance won't cover, good luck! it will be interesting to see how you get on.

Suzanne I could have written this myself. OMG...
however, I DO know that you can need hormones during the peri stage and really your doc should test your FSH to see how far along you are. There are gynos here in tampa that will test your hormones as a part of the FSH screening. Might be good to find a doctor that can do that. I mean, I am looking at a new wardrobe because I cant fit in my pants.... and and I had bad PMMD and I have constant PMS syptoms. The cost for me is 250 to see this doc and my bloodwork will be through my insurance.. But bioidentical creams are WAY cheaper than premarin cream (550$) vs. @ 80$ I take a diuretic also. But we are having the retention because our estrogen is spiking and we need to level out our ratios. I will let you know how my appt. goes on Tuesday.

I take a diuretic now every other day. Had to buy new bras. ridiculous...

I had the first high carb meal in about 2 months and I went from 146 to 152 OVERNIGHT! Complete intolerance to carbs. I figured...eh, maybe 3. so...once slice of pizza equals 6 pounds of water....

It's not 'intolerance' to carbs. If you are eating low carb and in ketosis, you have depleted glycogen in muscles. That glycogen returns when you go out of ketosis, and glycogen is bound to water. So there will always be a 5-7 lb weight gain with this influx of glycogen.

I went and he is sending me to get a ton of bloodwork. I will let you know what he finds. He did want me to start topical progesterone bioidentical transdermally after the bloodwork is taken but the lab they listed isn't on my plan so I have to get another script from them tomorrow. AGH! The challenges! He did say the progesterone cream would help immediately. Looking forward to seeing if that is accurate. I will let you know asap

what is weird is I never had normal periods until I went on Armour thryroid. Literally all my life 3 months without then id get it then 5 months without..etc.,. I even was put on the pill to regulate it at 17 and stayed on it until 35. Then got off it and was so irregular until 38 when I got on Armour. The month I went on it I got my period every 28 days like clockwork. Then at 49 in December I stopped and haven't had anything since then. I have had palapable ovarian cysts and started getting hot flashes about 4 years ago. Still regularthey tested my hormones in Sept. and they were perfect. Stopped getting periods in Dec. they tested me...almost THOUGH menopause. Like...seriously...gained 15 lbs since Dec. and all these weird things are happening to my body and slam...right through menopause.

well I have been on progesterone cream and DIM now for a few days and it seems my mood has calmed down and my boobs are normalizing. Still waiting for blood results but this is after a minimal amount of intervention. I hope it continues.

Still on transdermal progesterone cream and I found out my cortisol is low -crashed due to stress of my mom in hospital for 4 months and having to put my dog to sleep in december (he was my baby) and that is effecting my weightloss. Still 149. eating right and not losing an ounce

Hi aim!
Checked in to see how it's going with you - so did you get all your blood results back? any other weird stuff going on?

I'm in Europe on hols right now, and have put my symptoms on the back burner - eating for England - literally! and got a doozy of a period before I left, that lasted for 9 days, longest one ever!
Clean eating gone way out of the window, but not feeling any worse, than when I eat clean, funnily enough - enjoying the carb fest and knowing this will come off, when I get back to water and my routine.
hoping you are finding some relief - I have DIM at home hmm must try it,

DIM helped with my estrogen and my breasts. They were huge and it brought me back to my normal self there. But now with low cortisol, I have to get much more sleep that might help with diet . I am still 139 no matter what I do
what part of England are you visiting. My family is from the lake district. I'm first gen. American. spent my summers there and loved it. Went back for my honeymoon 4 years ago.
enjoy. Have a 99 ice cream for me.

Hi Aim,
I'm from Marlow in Buckinghamshire - down south originally, have been in US for 25 years - visited with friends and family. Poured with rain for 14 days straight, but had an amazing time!
I only gained 4 lbs from 2 weeks of shoveling everything in my gob! so that's something but walking everywhere, certainly helped! But back up to 155, which is bloaty and uncomfortable for me.
Glad the DIM is helping, I will start taking it and start looking for a hormone doc to sort this crap out, once and for all.

I'll chime in here.. 68 years old and have been on bios for 10 years..I take a troche which is estrogen and testosterone and a progesterone pill at night with a little progesterone cream. Also on 4 grains of Natur-thyroid.

My lowcarb doctor said after menopause your diet has to be perfect. That is what I have found after slipping off the wagon.. I can't eat carbs/sugar and still lose weight. Big lesson learned here.

My hormones are very well balanced and so is my thyroid, but it is the diet that needs more discipline!!!

I ate pork pies, fish and chips, had a massive curry night, cadbury's chocolate fingers, lamb roast dinner with yorkshire puddings for easter - the list goes on and on!
Then 4 days on the Italian riviera, with all the cheeses, meats and fresh bread and red wine, that, that entails
The rain just added to the charm - living in LA, I never get to see it - it made for good walking weather through the countryside and big puffy jackets to hide my belly fat - all good
