Is anyone doing this with no artificial sweeteners??

I am trying to do LC with no artificial sweeteners (well, very very little, I chew SF gum), other that that, none. I need some tips if you do... Do you use anything at all to sweeten things, or just go non-sweet completely? I used to use a lot of Splenda, and have cut that out. I'm just not sure if there is anything "non-artificial" that is conducive to LC.

Thanks for any help!

I dropped them completely last month, for Lent, but I don't think I'll start using them again. I do miss them sometimes, but not as much as I thought.

I did totally at first. Now I use erythritol and sometimes mix a little stevia in for the very occasional dessert treat. And for a low carb granola I make which cries out for a little sweetener.

I seem to tolerate erythritol well. It's not very sweet. It has NO bitter aftertaste and it doesn't bother my digestive tract at all. It's supposedly "all natural" but I don't understand that claim because it's a highly processed derivative of corn. But when I absolutely need a little sweetener, it works. I don't use it often.

This summer I'm plotting to make some low carb Ice cream, and I'll probably use it for that.

I have been 'sweet free' for about a year (with a couple of unsuccessful attempts to have some AS) mainly because the 'sweet' taste is a trigger for me and inevitably leads to overeating.

I was hoping that I'd be able to handle Quest bars because they'd be convenient for travel, but the sweet taste gets to me every time.

With total abstinence, I don't miss it at all.

I'm weaning myself off of them slowly. I started out with an all day Diet Pepsi habit and decided to quit the Aspartame. I still have my first cup of coffee with Splenda in it and drink the next 2 black. Sometimes I have cottage cheese with a little Splenda and vanilla for breakfast and about 2 diet pops with Splenda a day. I need to get off the daily Splenda though because it gives me cravings. Can't stand the taste of Stevia or I'd use that instead.

I am on week 6 of low carbing and decided to only use artificial sweetners once a week as a treat (say in my coffee or for low carb cheese cake). When I do use them my cravings for bread and other sweets increases. Haven't used the AS at all this week and my desire for carbs is completely gone!

I use Stevia. There are different brands, so some people may prefer one over another.

I also sometimes have DeMet's Sugar Free Turtles, which are sweetened mostly with erythritol.

I don't consume aspartame or Splenda.

I guess I should have clarified that stevia is not an artificial sweetener. It is from a plant leaf.

I intend to but haven't made the leap yet (day 4). I'm using Splenda as a crutch till there's a) no more in my house and b) I can get into the LC swing of things.

I believe a/s are poisoning us and are no friend to weight loss. JMHO.

I used to use artificial sweetners all the time, on strawberries, in iced tea/coffee---drank diet soda ALL THE TIME. I cut it all out and over time I realized that I don't need it. I really think your body will adjust and you will be able to taste the pure sweetness from food and you'll learn to enjoy it. That's what happened to me. fruit is so much sweeter to me now and I can taste the sweetness in veggies too....my iced tea is refreshing and my coffee with half and half is so much better to me... Only on occasion I will use Truvia (from the stevia plant)

Thank you all for your responses. I have been doing pretty well with no sweeteners at all. I was addicted to SF Torani for a while, and now I am drinking my coffee with just half and half. Its taken some getting used to, but it's working out okay. As far as sweet food goes, I haven't missed it yet.

I'm thinking that if I REALLY want something sweet, I will figure something else out.

Good for you!
I really think you are doing the right thing.
I have been working hard to completely give up the idea that I
need or deserve something sweet.
I believe that "sweetness" real or artificial is a key element to
my carb addiction.

i have no need of them.

i always take my beveridges (hot or cold) w/o them. it saves several grams of carb a day, which i could put towards more veggies. I was never a BIG fan of veggies until it became necessary to restrict quantities, at least for a while. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

I'm not completely sweetener free, but I use maybe two teaspoons of splenda a week.

I think the last thing I had was three days ago when the one minute muffin recipe called for a teaspoon. Before that I don't recall what I used it for.

No tips from me. I just go without. I didn't add much sugar to my diet before low carb, and was not a big sweet eater. So perhaps I was well placed to do without.

I have used Splenda in the occasional cup of tea, but I mainly drink it unsweetened. The rest of my diet is eggs, meat, dairy and green veg all of which don't call for sugar.

John.

I wish I could pull the plug on ASs completely, but I love my morning coffee with splenda too much. I am taking it slowly and trying to change my WOE one step at a time. I hope one day that step can be eliminating ASs, but not just yet. I have cut down dramatically on diet soda, though, which eliminates a lot of them right there.

Yeah, I was on a Chik Fil A Diet Lemonade bender for a while a year or so ago...now I just do water, ice tea w/ no sweetener, and coffee w/ cream..nothing else. Really...for like 6 months now (with the exception of the coffee, I was drinking Torani in it up until recently). I haven't had diet soda in years. So far, the no sweetener in the coffee has been the hardest thing.

Thank you all for your responses and support. I really appreciate it.

I like sweet food and use artificial sweeteners and for me it does not trigger a desire to eat more. The opposite is true with items like sf hard candy or protein drinks with sweeteners.

That said I agree that less is better and the less one uses the more one notices the natural sweetness in food.

I have a giant carton of splenda in the cupboard that I have had for six months or more unopened. I have no desire to use it but for me it is not forbidden if I desire to use it. I just don't.

I rarely have AS's these days but it is more due to not being able to locate them here. I am kinda paleo without meaning to just because products are a bugger to find and ridiculously expensive if you can find them.

The only tip I have is use the best quality coffee / tea you can find if you normally like it sweet. If I drink crappy coffee black its terrible, but with a good one the flavour makes up for it. Your taste will probably adapt in time. Like Silas, I was never a big sweet lover so its been a pretty easy transition.

Not fair! The closest Chic-fli-A is almost 2 hour away from me! I keep hearing good stuff about that place but I've never been.

I wish I could. I use very little as it is, but do like to have splenda or davinci's in my coffee. And there is really no way I'd give up Diet Coke.
My give up for this time around is sugar alcohols (candy, ice cream, etc)

Years ago I drank a minimum of 2 liters of diet coke a day... or coke zero, diet dr. pepper, diet pretty much anything. Then I just stopped one day. I always said I would NEVER give it up...Then one day I just did. I accidentally took a sip of my husbands one day a while back and had to spit it out..OMG..it was SOOOOOOOO sweet.

When I went paleo a few months ago I gave up AS, and don't much miss them. When I bake or make pancakes with almond meal and flax meal and want some sweetness I add a bit of mashed banana or applesauce, cinnamon, vanilla, coconut...those add a little sweetness....and some carbs of course, which I can now tolerate....

I have gotten used to everything less sweet and am happy with that. I still control for carbs, but natural and organic are also extremely important to me now.

I've never used lots of AS, but when I did I preferred xylitol and erythritol. At least x if not both, lethal for dogs....another reason I prefer not to use them....

I'm hoping that I just get used to not having sweet coffee at all...so far so good. It's definitely easier now then it was a few days ago. I'm hoping that soon it will just be my coffee, and not strange "naked coffee".
