Fighting the crud

I’m dealing with the crud and wanted to share how I’m handling it LC style. Would love to hear other lessons learned! Tis the season!

I’ve been suffering from chest congestion and a bad cough for a few weeks so I finally went to a doctor yesterday and either have acute bronchitis or walking pneumonia. Doc said meds are the same so thankfully no chest X-ray needed. I’m now on steroids and antibiotics. Doc offered cough syrup but wasn’t aware of any sugar free options. I talked to my pharmacist and she had a sugar and alcohol free type called Diabetic Tussin. It’s super strong and tastes disgusting but seems to help. I also found some sugar free cough drops by Riccola in a yellow bag. I’m hoping the meds kick in fast as I feel like crap. Was up most of the night coughing.

I also wanted chicken noodle soup so ran to the store to get some ingredients for a low carb version and this is what I came up with:

6 cups chicken broth (large Swanson carton)
1 rotisserie chicken, shredded
1 yellow onion
Green onions
6 stalks celery
1 bad frozen riced cauliflower savory herb flavor
1 pkg frozen chopped spinach

I first sautéed the celery and onions in a stick of butter then added all the other ingredients. I added some garlic powder, salt and pepper too. It was truly delicious!

I'm big on herbals. My go to for bronch is Mullein, when it's really severe, I add in elecampane (which I've only found in two places). My favorite cough syrup is literally called "old indian cough syrup", it's made with wild cherry bark. When I've got a BAD infection I use straight up guaifenesin, IOW, plain Mucinex. I can't take stuff with "chemical" expectorants or decongestants, it messes with my blood pressure.

I went to a juice store recently, got this kick butt stuff called a "flu shot". Tasted nasty but I'm thinking about trying to recreate the recipe, Tumeric, ginger, cayenne, lemon juice, and one dose knocked the last of this phlegmy stuff I've been dealing with for over a month totally out.

From my early teens I got bronchitis every year and I got viral pneumonia (put me in the hospital for a week) in my mid 20s.

Oh, for your LC "illness" chicken soup, think about adding a LOT more garlic, I'm talking heads, at least two. And fresh parsley, two bunches. One plus the stalks of the other for the stock and the leaves of the other roughly chopped for the soup itself. Garlic is a better antibiotic than onion and the parsley adds tons of microminerals and vitamin C.

Wow good for you. When I get sick I usually cry on the sofa asking for a quick death, even if it's only a cold.

Feel better soon. And good for you for the good low carb choices you have made. Staying low carb should help your recovery.

I like egg drop soup if you want to get some extra protein. And ginger is also good.

Egg Drop Soup

1.5 cups chicken broth
garlic (1 clove if fresh or a pinch if powdered)
ginger (1 tsp if fresh or a pinch if powdered)
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tbsp. soy sauce
1 green onion chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten

Bring all ingredients except the egg to a gentle boil. Slowly pour egg through the tines of a fork into the pot. Gently stir. Voila!
