Kidney Failure

Well this looks like a pretty inactive board, but on the off chance someone sees this, I'm wondering if anyone has had to deal with kidney disease/failure and how you're coping. I'm on dialysis now and can't believe all the carbs they want you to eat, even on a diabetic plan. Hoping to hear someone else's experience.

I am not and have never gone through this, but I give you and hope you are well. It would be helpful to know if the carbs are really beneficial in your case, or if this is just what they normally suggest.

I have no personal experience, but I would suggest looking up Dr, Jason Fung. He is a Canadian nephrologist that recommends low carb and intermintant fasting for diabetes.

We had a friend who was in dialysis before he got his new kidney. The dr told him how to eat lower carb. Of course, you have to match it to your insulin, too.

I wonder why they want you to eat so many carbs? My gfriends diabetic dr told her 150 carbs a day.

Most Diabetic doctor and educators recommend a diet much higher in carbs than what I find to be beneficial for blood sugar control. I was told 45 grams at each meal and 15gms at 2 snacks. I don't understand their reasoning. Personally I try to limit my carbs to vegetables. I don't know if there is some other particular reason for the carbs while on dialysis.

My understanding is that for folks with kidney failure protein is very hard on their systems. So I think that the idea is to rely on more carbs and much less protein.
