Binge eating remedy

Has anyone found anything that helps? Low carb does not stop the binges or at least not for long. I only binge on sweets. I don't binge on bread, pasta or fast food, just ice cream, cookies, candy bars etc...I have read brain over binge and many other books, they do not help.

therapy Jeanie. You have been struggling with this for a long long time. I think you should see an eating disorder specialist.

I would binge on sweets, too, and the only thing that 'saves' me is total abstinence from sweets--i.e., absolutely nothing with a sweet taste.

Oddly, when I'm abstinent, I have no cravings for sweets at all, but even the slightest sweet will result in cravings.

I seem to be like an alcoholic where sweets are concerned, but I do what works for me.

The other day when I was driving, I had a sudden craving for doughnuts. Then I realized I had just passed a store that used to be a bakery. It has been closed for over a year, but my subconscious still associated that stretch of road with doughnuts.

One thing to try is to be more aware of what triggers the craving. For the next few days, write down every time you have a craving and try to figure out what triggered it. Try to be specific.

I used to be really big on sweets, especially chocolate. A few years ago I started to up my vegetable consumption, and gradually I found that sweets no longer appealed to me. I guess I changed my taste buds. It was over a period of several months. I didn't stop the sweets and start the veggies. I just gradually didn't crave the sweets anymore. A lot of people don't want to add veggies because 1) they don't like them or 2) they don't want the carbs. But for me, it was worth it to lose the sugar cravings. Occasionally I will try something that DH is eating but it tastes so sickeningly sweet to me now I can't stand it. Worked for me, but might not work for everyone.

Beachguy, DH eats a lot of doughnuts and other baked goods. Sometimes a doughnut will look so good to me, but then I break off a little piece and it doesn't taste nearly as good as I'd remembered.

Carol! That is so odd that you say that, but it is exactly the same for me. I mostly eat veggies now and I so very rarely ever crave something sweet. It is like getting the micronutrients I needed reset something. Worth a try jeannie.

My problem isn't sweets, it's things like CheezIts crackers. I ration out half a serving....around 14 crackers, 9 carbs.....in a small plate as "dessert". The problem is, after I eat a meal, I now crave those CheezIts as my treat to end the meal and I don't feel satisfied until I eat them. That's how cravings start with me. Once I eat that half serving, I'm satisfied. And if I didn't count out those 14 crackers, I know I would eat five times that much.

What kind of veggies do you all eat? I only like the bad ones like peas, corn , lima beans, green beans and salad if it is topped with ranch.

My ex neighbor makes the most delicious broccoli that doesn't even taste like broccoli. She sprays olive oil on the broccoli and sprinkles on vegetable season, places the broccoli on a cookie sheet and roasts it. I love it, it's crunchy like French fries and delicious. I also like Italian green beans, but I have a hard time finding them pre frozen.

I buy big bunches of chard and Kale and sauté them in mushroom broth with garlic and coconut amino's. So delicious. I add the greens to omelettes, Stirfries, etc. I also make green smoothies, and I roast big trays of veggies. If you're not eating lots of vegetables I would bet your binges are because you're missing micro nutrients that you're not getting

I would think green beans and salad with ranch dressing would be fine, no?

My theory is that my body wants nutrients. If it gets them, it's satisfied. If it doesn't get them the cravings come out as craving sweets, salty, etc.

I don't know if green beans and salad would do it, because they are not something I eat. I eat salad occasionally, but I am one who prefers my food to be warm/hot, rather than cold/room temp. I eat all kinds of veggies. I buy mostly frozen, and sometimes I just cook the mixed veggies....corn, peas, green beans, limas, like you put in veggie soup. I also cook a mixture of carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and brussels sprouts and just put butter and salt on them. Sometimes I roast them on a baking sheet, spraying them with olive oil spray, maybe a dash of seasoning. Cauliflower, broccoli, brussels sprouts, quartered onions, frozen artichoke hearts, carrots, sweet potatoes....whatever. DH will eat that, but he puts ranch dressing on his. For a while, every week I would buy a veggie from the produce department...something I had never tried before....turnips, parsnips, rutabagas. I used to buy greens, but DH doesn't eat them and they would go bad before I used them up. Now I buy frozen chopped kale and add that to my scrambled eggs along with sauteed mushrooms. Oh, I also saute chopped cabbage with some onion, then add some of the frozen chopped kale. When I eat it, I sprinkle it with crumbled Feta Cheese. Yum!

I know a lot of hard corn LCers consider veggies bad since they are carbs. But to me, if it stops me from craving sweets and other junk food it's worth it to eat them. I don't think I got fat from eating too much broccoli.

Jeaniem, it's possible that if you started to eat other veggies in small quantities you would begin to like them.

Yes the frozen veggies the soup type is what I like. I love succotash! I have never tried roasting veggies that may be worth a try. I tire of green beans and truly the salad with ranch is more about the olives, bacon and cheese that accompany the romaine.

Roasting vegetables makes all of them better in my book. I do carrots, onions, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts (that I don't otherwise care for), beets- just about anything. I cut them up, toss them with avocado oil, put them on a big baking sheet on parchment paper, grind pink salt over the lot, and roast at 400ish degrees until they look good.

They are great hot that night, then later cold tossed on a salad, or chopped up and scrambled in eggs.

L-glutamine is awesome for stopping cravings. I swear by that stuff! You can get it in capsule form or in powder form. You can put it right on your tongue when you're having a craving. I had horrible craving issues until I googled "supplement to stop cravings" and started taking it right away. I was amazed at how well it worked.

I know everyone may not agree with me here and Im no advocate but I have recently been prescribed Vyvanse for my binge eating.

My binging had been spiraling out of control for 10 months. I gained 70 pounds in that time and truly started thinking about taking my own life because the food was killing me anyways and the way my body felt, I didnt want to live that way. I went to my doctor and told him the truth about everything. He knows I do NOT like to take medication but seeing the damage I have done to myself, U was desperate for ANY help. I have been taking Vyvanse 20mg a day now for 2 weeks and have not binged once. Maybe a few too many nuts once or twice but nothing that even comes close to my usual 5,000-7,000 calorie binges of old. It erases the urge to binge. I know what the drug is doing in my body because I have exhaustively researched its case studies and benefits, comparing them to the side effects and risks. For me, its working beautifully. I dont want to be medicated forever so I am also going to start attacking my Binge Eating Disorder from the psychological side as well. I needed it to stop and I didnt have time to wait. My quality of life was very very poor. In writing this I am realizing that I have only been on the medication and binge free for 9 days actually. Only 9 days ago my days were spent eating until I fell asleep all day while my son was at school and then I was practically a zombie all night. I had zero joy. Zero. Completely disgusted with myself and convinced that every person in my life would be better off if I ended mine. Every day I feel better. I am truly thankful that my doctor prescribed me the Vyvanse, now its up to me to find the reason for the addiction and try to work through it. I hope this helps. Good luck.
