Any Insulin Dependent Diabetics Here?

My BIL just diagnosed. Previously my sister and he were vegans, vegetarians, but now considering adding meat back to their diet.

Any diet advice? Is it too late for low carb for him? He was just dx last week at the ER.

May I suggest you investigate the 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet by Dr Michael Moseley. And Jason Fung's The Obesity Code. Both hugely relevant for the reversing of type 2 diabetes.

I wish your brother the best possible outcome.

Embrace a little hunger. It is the sign of healing.

Hunger is not an emergency.

It's not what you eat between Christmas and New Year that makes you fat, it's what you eat between New Year and Christmas.

I'm 6'5", 60, M, and was diagnosed with T2 in 2010.

I used to use nearly a vial of insulin a day, with some success. Then I started lazy Keto in 2013, dropping that to a third of a vial of insulin daily, with better blood sugar control most of the time.

I switched from lazy Keto to a restricted calorie version of Keto at the start of 2017 (goal of <1200 calories, >80g protein, <20g net carbs) and...

-- Dropped 180 pounds so far (only another 230 to go).
-- I haven't used insulin since 2016
-- I am no longer taking Metformin (or any other Diabetes medication)
-- A1C dropped from 7.3 to 5.2
-- Average blood sugar dropped from about 170 (on insulin) to about 100 (no insulin).
-- Almost all of my blood work has improved
-- I'm not hungry all the time

Possibly type 2

This gets complicated! Because of huge swings in sugar readings, was told about being a Type 2 a few mos ago, but then again it could be LADA or Type 1.5 per the NP at the endo's office. Then she decided it's Type 2 finally and was put on 14U Tresiba (which is a long acting insulin shot at night) and this seems to be okay for now. When very strict with carbs (and taking the shot at night) the sugar readings are definitely way better. At one point a while back wasn't as strict with low carbing (was mistakenly told it was okay to eat berries and just way too many carbs by the NP and my GP, which found out the hard way that for me it isn't) and was running too high in my sugar readings so then was told to take Met 500 at my largest meal by the endo NP. Then when doing way better watching/restricting the carbs the glucose comes down to around 60 and my GP took me OFF the Met because of that. 20 carbs is about it for me, looks like, plus taking the shot at night. It's a roller coaster but just so much FUN.

PS Don't get on these boards as often as I would like, so apologize for that.
