Hi All
I went on the Stillman diet back in the 60s and lost 100 lbs in about 8 months. Now I'm on it again for a week and a 1/2 now. I'm 72 now and having trouble with constipation. It was 8 days on the diet before I went. Since I started I have been taking metamucil 3x a day and stool softeners but no laxatives. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. An all protein diet, or a protein sparing modified fast, is by definition a no-residue diet.

I would ease up on the metamucil, if your menu is clean and true to plan. Your body will eliminate when it has somehing to eliminate. It can take awhile, as the protein consumed on Stillman's is fully digested and absorbed.

Welcome back!

Welcome back white stars!

I like to drink Smooth Move tea. It works great but I'm beginning to worry about whether I am using it too much. I read some things that said it can give you 'lazy bowels.' I have had issues with constipation all my life (whether low carb or not) and my thyroid doesn't help matters either, although being medicated has helped.

Maybe my bowel expectations are too high?? I mean, I have read it's normal to go 3 times a day to 3 times a week -- but if I don't go for one day I get freaked out and drink the tea.

Hi. Definitely check out Natural Calm powder or Mag07. You can buy them online or sometimes even find them in a grocery store or vitamin shoppe. They will most definitely help - and they are all natural and no sugar.

You guys there is no-residue in the intestines, when someone is doing Stillmans. So forcing the intestines to eliminate when there is nothing there, is forcing them.

Senna causes contractions and spasms, that is why it is said to "cause lazy bowels", and magnesium conversely works by drawing all of the water out of our system.

But on Stillmans, or on any VLC diet that is primarily meat only: there is no residue in the body once that protein is broken down and assimilated.

You need to eat carbs or fiber, in order to be able to form a BM. Otherwise, it can take many days.

If you are eating protein only, you are not "constipated" for not having eliminated anything for several consecutive days running, and not being able to force the BM also doesn't indicate constipation on this diet.

It indicates that your body has processed, metabolized, and absorbed all of the protein you have ingested, and that there is not enough residue of anything yet, to form a BM.

honeypie is correct on all points. It could take days before having a BM. I have gone a week without any ill effects. No pain, not nothing. I have never taken anything to make myself go, I just enjoy the time I dont have to spend in the bathroom. If you feel its been way too long, upping the fat has always flushed me out. Like a big bowl of ground beef. I wouldnt want to force my body to do something it wasnt ready to do, so please be careful and good luck!

Thanks so much to all who replied. I am going with the theory of not to worry about it and that there's nothing there. Also I have stopped the metamucil. Thanks again
