For people with only 10 to 20 lb to lose, or for maintenance, my understanding is that it works well. My sister just lost the 15-20 lb she had gained over the past four years or so in about six months doing 5:2. She has never been obese, just getting older. :-) She plans to do DD as needed for life. She's currently at about 155 (5'9') and feels her best weight is 145.

I lost all my weight with JUDDD- EOD. For 2.5 years I maintained using 5:2 after 2.5 years of maintaining with 5:2 I started gaining with 5:2, so back to EOD it was for me. I hope someday I can again maintain with 5:2, but not at this time. We are all different with different physiology. Also, over the course of years- different things work differently.

it makes me think this : i wonder why do we have to eat for only half the week to remain at a good weight whereas everyone else can eat every day? if our metabolisms are now healed? if we are now 'well' and no longer insulin resistant>?
i hope you answer carly, cos you have all my respect.
i have to find a diet which will keep me at a good weight but that fits into my lifestyle too.

I can only answer to me but... For my height, age and activity level my calorie input would be about 1500 calories to maintain my weight. That is with a healthy metabolism and no issues. That is also if I had not lost 100lbs and dieted most of my adult life. So really it is less. I'm very thankful I'm as tall as I am.

I don't know about you but I love food and I eat too much. All food groups included. If I didn't I wouldn't have gotten overweight to begin with. I do not want to live on low calories everyday. I hate constant restrictions for me it leads to bingeing which can easily equal 3 to 5000 calories. I do love fat and cheese with my carbs.

With JUDDD I can eat more at one time. Yes I'm on a diet half the month, but.. half the month I'm not! It allows me to enjoy social events and lose or maintain my weight. I'm sure as you've been reading losing the weight is the easy part. Ha and that's not always easy at all!
It boils down to I have to eat less if I want to be tiny. It would be so much easier to be fat. For me I feel it is worth it. We all have to decide what is right for us as individuals.

Unfortunately I have to count my up days to lose weight. I didn't use to and lost quickly in the beginning. If I don't pay attention to what and how much I eat I will overeat. I can also over eat on low carb/no carb and also high fat. I might feel full but it doesn't seem to stop my jaws!

Most who start do not worry about up days and only count DD calories.

Carly I hope you don't mind me throwing in my 2 cents!

first of all, i'm relieved to hear that you, Carly, are going back to EOD. i don't visit here very often, but i worry about you.

i went a full year in maintenance before i fully realized that i can eat more with the EOD pattern. it may not be much, but it is enough for me to think twice before veering away when in maintenance.

it may be different for all of us. it may be common among those that have lost a higher percentage of their weight?

it is not just that i can eat more at a time. it goes farther than that, but i am not into science. i just really only know me.

i suspect that it is something to do with the SIRT1 gene. eating 5:2 maybe doesn't challenge your metabolism enough?

(i'm not currently doing EOD because i have gotten to the point where i NEED to eat more at a time for my sanity's sake. i am in WLM, but that's another story.)

I can't really say what other do in a very general sense, but most of the women around me, that are over the age of 35 either work pretty diligently to stay slim or they are significantly overweight but they eat 3 meals a day- every day.

I can't say and wouldn't say that my metabolism was "broken". It very well may have been impaired as I was anorexic as a teenager and in my early 20's. I have PCOS and used to have out of control diabetes.

I am not longer diabetic- confirmed by both my PCP and endocrinologist.

JUDDD fits into my life well. I like that no food groups are off limits and I do not feel deprived.

I love that you jumped in Leanne! I'm barely 5'2". Quite sure I'm officially under 5'1" at this point- due to a spine disease that is causing premature shrinking, so at age 40 and about 125lb I just don't burn very many calories going about my daily activities which include walking 5-8 miles a day depending on time and weather factors.

It is what it is. I value my improved health, increased levels of energy and significantly boosted confidence that I have since losing and maintaining my loss with JUDDD- so it's a trade off, but for me I'd hardly consider it a significant sacrifice compared to the benefits.

I mean- look if I could eat anything I wanted all day long and be 125lbs- I'd be thrilled, but that is NOT my reality. I don't believe it's many women's reality once they reach age 30.

i went a full year in maintenance before i fully realized that i can eat more with the EOD pattern. it may not be much, but it is enough for me to think twice before veering away when in maintenance.

it may be different for all of us. it may be common among those that have lost a higher percentage of their weight?

it is not just that i can eat more at a time. it goes farther than that, but i am not into science. i just really only know me.

i suspect that it is something to do with the SIRT1 gene. eating 5:2 maybe doesn't challenge your metabolism enough?

(i'm not currently doing EOD because i have gotten to the point where i NEED to eat more at a time for my sanity's sake. i am in WLM, but that's another story.)
I've been doing EOD all summer. I did two 4 day rounds of Stillman's. It takes the weight off quickly, but for me it's not anything I could do longer than 4 days.
