Oh geez.. carb inventory time.. yogurt- 16. FF cottage cheese - 10- protein powder 15. I thought these were allowed. Is the goal ZERO carb??

I had read of others using these things to make it more doable-am I doing something wrong? I know it's a ketogenic diet but thought that would be low enough for that.

I wouldn't sweat it with the FF yogurt and cottage, but what kind of carbs are in your protein powder? What brand do you use? 15g carbs for protein powder is lot, isn't it? I mean, isn't there only like 25g protein even, in a serving?

You need a protein powder that is only like 2-3g total carbs per scoop.

It is purely inspired organic protein- 10g carb per 2 scoops (7 of that is fiber). There's 20g protein per 2 scoop serving. I usually have 1 or 1.5 servings per day. Maybe I can find a lower carb one. The cottage cheese is 5g carb and 13 protein per half cup.

DL~ I seem to remember both Stillman and Dukan both saying to limit the cottage cheese to a half a cup a day; not a free for all. If I were you, I'd LOSE all and any carbs and keep those for mnts. Why prolong the wt. loss process any LONGER than you have to. Just my mindset. U are so close to goal, I say getter done and then add those goodies back in later. JMO Sorry to be debbie downer. I'm a purist as is Al and we get this crap off and then go from there. I lost 30 lbs in a month my first time around. Meat and that's it, with an occasional FF yogurt or Cottage Cheese dealio! U can do it; it's a mind thing.

That protein powder has carbs because there is A LOT of other stuff in it, other than just protein. First of all, it's pea protein powder, and it's vegan. So by definition, it is going to have more carbs. But there is also A LOT of filler in there, like maltodextrin and cellulose (which is sawdust, basically) that accounts for a lot of those carbs on the label.

You're not vegan, so I would highly recommend getting OFF a plant based protein supplement. Plant based protein is highly inferior in quality, and in the way it is treated and assimilated by the body.

Your highest quality protein powder supplement would be a combination powder made from combined protein types, such as whey + micellear casein. They are slow-release, and do not spike insulin the way that simple whey can. Whey is highly insulogenic by itself. But plant protein is even worse, including nutritionally, and essentially worthless.

There are a couple of really good combo whey + micellar casein powders, but am I allowed to mention any, besides what is stocked on netrition? Quest is one, and they have that, so at least I can recommend you that one.

I know they sell your brand at Whole Foods, but Whole Foods sells a lot of garbage, if you get down to ingredient lists. Maltodextrin and cellulose are absolute garbage. And that's just for a start.

Also, the carbs in greek yogurt will typically be less than is listed on the label by about half, whereas for cottage, the carbs will always be at least the full amount listed.

So don't be afraid of yogurt!

Ok thanks for the advice everyone!! I had the protein left over from when I was doing a vegan diet. I will loook for something more pure today!! As for FF cottage cheese I usually just have a half cup, sometimes 2 servings but usually not. I could cut that out. As for yogurt, Greek, fat free, never more than 2 a day.

What about sweeteners? I do drink sucralose and stevia and sent DH to the store for Crystal Light per Al.. hope that's ok.

Thanks for the insight!! I know I should be a purist it just makes it a little easier sometimes to have something to look forward to. Maybe I need to toughen up a wee bit
I do exercise quite a bit too, but that probably doesn't matter much for weight loss.

Did you girlies get enough protein today? I think steak should be on the menu tonight.

Some Book Stuff = The Doctor's Quick Weight Loss Diet 1967 - Hardcover
My comments are in ()

Page 21
5. COTTAGE CHEESE, FARMER CHEESE, POT CHEESE and other cheeses made with skim milk and no whole milk. (this is not written this way in the sticky)

Page 22
You may use common seasonings such as salt, pepper, garlic cloves, thyme, other herbs and spices, cocktail sauce, tabasco sauce, horseradish, and ketchup.

(I can put down some garlic cloves for sure, but I wont!! Is tabasco sauce franks red hot?? Better be... onward to find mustard....)

Page 22
If you're much determined to lose weight rapidly, and you cut down your eating to a minimum on the QWL Diet, take 2 of the once-daily vitamin tablets each day (OOPS!!)

Page 29 - What Not To Eat (this one is a tough read-lol)
No dairy products out side of the eggs and a few cheeses mentioned in the listing. (whoa..eggs were dairy back in the day?? LOL)

Page 32 - Additional Points
After you've been on the QWL Diet for some time and taken off more than 30 pounds, you may add moderate portions of artificially sweetened gelatin, plain yogurt, skim milk. However, you will lose faster if you don't add these foods. (why cant the man ever be exact. We are a group that needs exact darnit )

Page 32
As with all reducing diets, I suggest that you have no more than eight hours of sleep daily with this method. (Raise your hand if you get 8 hrs - NOT)

Pgs 42-45 Calorie Counter and listed serving size
Cottage Cheese - 1 oz
Farmer/Pot Cheese - 1 oz
Skim Milk - 1 cup
Plain Yogurt - 1 cup

Lean Beef -4 oz
Chicken- 3 oz (If this is 3 times a day then I am WAAAAAY over limit )
Turkey - 3 oz
Seafood - 3 oz

(Skipping through Stay Slim Eating and lots of "Rapid Reducing and Bizarre Diets" chapters, but here are a few that may be of interest..Note Adults with ailments such as diabetes, kidney, liver or heart disease should be under the care of a physician.

- Meat Only Diet includes 1/2 pound of any lean meat, 3x a day

- Poultry Only Diet same as Meat but with all skin removed (guess thats me)

- Fish Only same as above, choose lean fish

- Meat, Poultry Fish Only - Ex. of Menu.. Breakfast broiled fish, Lunch chicken, Dinner some shrimps, a small chicken leg, and some lean meat

- Yogurt Only Diet - 120 Calories of yogurt 5-6 times a day

-Suit Yourself One Dimensional Diet - Choose one or two favorite foods that are naturally large in bulk and low in calories. Figure out the quantity that will total less than 900 calories a day, space out the number of meals.

High Fat High Protein Diets - Zero Carb, High Fat, Low salt. He even references Wilhalmur Steffenson and the Eskimos. Mentions their bodies were heavily exercised. Says no smoked, salted, or pickled (perhaps this is were I had the vinegar is banned idea in my head) meat. Heres a sample menu:
B: 2 eggs, 3 unsalted bacon, coffee and cream
L: 6 oz. fish fried in oil, sliced tomato with oil/mayo, coffee with cream
D: 8 oz of fatty meat, salad of lettuce and tomato, with oil/mayo, coffee with cream
snack:cheese, or chicken, or hard boiled egg

He says you may season with pepper and MUSTARD He also says his QWL diet is far more effective- pg83 (But why not mustard on QWL, DOC!! )

and on page 105... one patient ate cottage cheese mixed with ketchup, daily for 14 weeks!!! OMGosh.. hmmmm might be yummy with ketchup

OK...My fingers need a break. xoxox

I wonder for someone like me who has 5-10lbs. to lose if these foods would be acceptable?

Thank you AL for taking the time to post all that

I still have my original food journal in my book from 2009 (all of our original posts from this time were deleted. It makes me sad. If I had known, I would have happily paid for a backup..It was seriously the diary I never kept of my life!!

I started then at 189 lbs, and it took me 27 weeks to get to 122. I included all kinds of meat and tuna. That is waaay too slow for this amount of torture. lol So fast forward to my last run, it took me pretty much the same amount of time 24 weeks, and I only lost 5 more pounds. I was more strict with only chicken breast and occasionally steak when I ate out.

I have no experience with eggs and cottage cheese, or cream in my coffee, or jello or yogurt. If I tried them it wasnt a point were I was super serious about Stillmans. Everyone has to find there own way and when we are ready we will be READY!!! I pray everyone gets the best shot at getting to goal in the quickest amount of time possible.

what I'll get into tomorrow is all his insane quotes! He has pages and pages of every excuse in the book, and how he shoots us "overweights" down each time. He could be a meanie.

Al~ Did you mean to write 0.5 for cottage cheese at the top of the list?

Thnks so much for all your hard work. Yes, Stilies was a bit 'harsh' with his distain for overweight people.
Jean~ I'm hungrier today as well. I keep nibbling on egg whites here and there but I think I'm gonna have to eat something a bit more substantial. We can eat when we are hungry, thank goodness. And, without fear and dread I may add.

Those were in the calorie count guide, listed for each serving was the calorie amount. 1 oz of cottage cheese was not a typo, but it didn't necessarily mean that's how much we have to eat. The book is very vague, as you know. lol the 4 oz of beef makes sense, even though I like a bigger meat portion.

I also have the inches off book, which has its own version of QWL. Maybe I can get more info there. I really think his point has always been eat as much as you want, but as little as possible.... oh yeah... we get it doc. Your not confusing.. lololol

I am doing more of a high protein low fat diet vs stillman's. My own fault as I didn't read up on the diet and thought yogurt was okay. I am losing well and not binge eating so I will consider that a win! Anyway I don't want to muddy the waters here since this is a stillman's by the book thread and it appears I am not by the book. I do appreciate the info and all of you for welcoming me to the group. I know you all are dedicated to stillman's and will no doubt reach your weight loss goals! I will stop in and say Hi

awww Jeanie, don't go. You can eat whatever you want to get to goal. You are so close!! I like to post from the book from time to time to keep my fingers busy. If I'm typing away I can't be spooning loads of meat into my mouth! Honeypie had great results eating yogurt this past week. I hope I didn't come across the wrong way. I was just slow at work and tried to add info that could be important to someone out there. Wishing you the best whatever you decide! Hugs

My first go at Stills many moons ago, I would have a half a cup of TJ's Greek Yogurt and SF Jello. It was such a treat. I also thought of it as FF Cottage Cheese. Same cals and carbo's for my money's worth.

Please, hear my heart Jean~ And anyone else whom I may have offended... I think yogurt is absolutely okay. My inquiring as to the 45 carbos that DL was having just seemed high, I was NOT JUDGING and or trying to alienate her or anyone else. I was simply trying to help impart what worked for ME!

Wish I never mentioned the carb details!! It was a bit high that day but I also ran 4 miles and ate them mostly early on in the day. I didn't think 45 was all that appalling but I understand it could inhibit you if you want to reach your goal lightening quick. Honestly I'm pretty happy at 128 and if it takes 2 months to lose 8 lbs I'm okay with that. I think I'll keep going with the yogurt and if i stop making progress I'll cut it out. I do love the way I feel and no more bingeing!

I did buy the Quest protein honeypie suggested so I think I'm in compliance now.

Good Morning!

Jean! 120s!

My turn to borrow the book so I'm reading as quickly as possible in case someone else wants it. Thanks for posting that link to it, (was it you B)? I didn't know about archive, love it. So far I have learned that my weight goal is quite lenient, at the top of Dr. Stillman's range. And that my portions are way too large. Radical mind adjustment needed.

At the grocery store yesterday found McCormack's Rotisserie spice and Wild Planet tuna. I'm happy with chicken and eggs right now but good to know options. I also perused the meats and saw one pound packages (four servings) of bison and 90/10 beef which I may get to change things up at some point. Oh, and frozen shrimp.

I hope you ladies who are close to goal will stay and keep talking about losing the final pounds and maintaining. It is where we all are headed!

With this plan, it is a change for me to weigh every day, generally terrified of the scale. Since I started on a Friday, those will be the weights I record in my signature.

I'm off this weekend, went to mass last evening, and have today to myself so my plans are reading plus coffee, feet up.

Amy~ CONGRATZ on such a great first week. Ms. AL was the angel who told us about the book On-Line. THANKS, AL. I don't know if you shopped at Costco or not but they have all of those items in bulk the Tuna the Bison and the Shrimp. OH, check out Trader Joes Extra Large Lump Crab too. It has NO FAT and is so sweet and yummy. I actually ate it PLAIN, imagine that! You wlll be at goal in no time flat. KUTGW!

DL~ I'm glad you mentioned the carbos as this is how we get to share what worked for us. Heck, you are in cruse mode and if it ain't broke... I think its great if you can eat that many carbs and still lose then your metabolically not as challenged. This is wonderful news for you. Sugar Free Sheila, once she lost all her wt, was surprised that she could eat 100 carbos a day as her CCL. Everyones milage may vary. It's all trial and error.

JEANIE~ YEAH, don't leave. Again, sorry for the over reaction. LOLOL This diet works, period, and if there are augmentations here and there within the parameters of what Dr S. wanted, I think this is better than NOT doing it. How much did you lose this week total again. AWESOME on being in the 120 land. So much fun. It's like Christmas. lolol

BRATTY~ Did you make your Pot O Gold yet?

Here's to another day! Boy, how much easier it really get's with each passing day, it's mind blowing. I keep looking at my calendar just knowing that one month from now I will be in my size 2 Skinnies again. I can't wait.

Thanks B! I am glad we can all be happy here, I truly am I have been in lots of challenges but this one is very active and the losses are phenomonal without what I feel is deprivation. 3.4 pounds off this week, of course as you know not with pure stillmans by the book proteins

Amy
I love the rotisserie seasoning! Congrats on the 8+ pound loss

Hey all!

Congrats on the loss Amy! Isn't it SO motivating to actually SEE results??? My portions are probably too large too but I'm working on it. I think I could be satisfied with less.

Jeanie, I'm so happy for you. I've followed along with your struggles with bingeing for a while and also had my own issues every month or so - isn't it amazing to find a diet where the cravings are gone and we don't have to suffer???

Al, thanks for the Crystal Light idea. I got some peach mango yesterday and since it was like 95 here I drank about 2 pitchers of it. No lie. As you say, it was good to get the water in. No can do plain water.. well, I can after running or whatever but generally I hate it. I do drink the LaCroix carbonated water.

B, I am going to get myself a Costco membership this week. I used to have one at Sam's Club but it ran out and I didn't renew it. Everyone I talk to says COSTCO is da bomb, that I was really missing out at Sam's. So I'll get over there this week. I wish there was one right near me but I'll have to drive about 5 miles. Not the end of the world by any means it's just a traffic nightmare over there.

honeypie, thanks for the idea about the Quest protein. It is SO good. I had a half scoop this morning... which was about 1.5 carbs I think. It tastes GREAT!

So happy with everyone's success with the scale, makes me slightly sad I didn't weigh today to 'see,' however I did measure my hips and waist and I've lost 3/4 of an inch off my hips and half an inch off my waist. YIPPY. My hips had not moved in months and that's where I like to carry my weight. Baby got back.. the line where he goes '36-24-36? Only if she's 5'3"..." well, that's me. But flatter chested. LOL!

We had a great day bbqing with some friends from church.. they're a beautiful older couple who are getting ready to celebrate 60 years of marriage. Wonderful and inspiring for DH and me to hang with them. We grilled a mass of food (DH always makes way more than we need) and they barely picked at one burger between the two of them. NOT big eaters!! lol I guess that's what happens when you get old??? It probably won't for me. But, I was happy with my turkey burger, mustard, and Crystal Light!

Off to church - hope you ladies have a wonderful Sunday.

Oh happy day!! Everyone has such great news to report. I love it!!

hahahaha - DL's got back!! whoop whoop! So glad you like the peach mango! I have mistakenly picked up regular Peach Tea when grabbing a bundle. It is not as good. I'll have to try the LaCroix next. My plain water has to be ice ice cold for me to get it down.

As for my stinky, yellow paged, old as time book, I think a lot of you guys make sooo much more sense than Stillman himself. I mean.. Theres times he speaks and doesnt even realize that certain foods even have carbs in them, or uses phrases like "for reasons unknown right now". lololol He's a hoot. The book is so entertaining and motivating for me though, so I ignore him and just happily go along doing what I gotta do.

Its so great that everyone is getting something out of this plan, and I can't see it ever stopping to work like some of the others. It is the greatest tool in our tool belt, for sure.

One last thing I'll mention pertaining to calories and maintenance.. (for reasons unknown or undescribed )

Pg 2-3 - How the Quick Weight Loss Method works
"When I added up their daily intake I found that they had consumed as few as 400 to 900 calories a day, without any desire for more food. Others, primarily taller persons, were eating up to 2000 calories a day on the QWL Diet and yet lost pounds rapidly although they hadn't been able to lose on other diets where they were eating less. The high protein consumption burned up many more calories per day." (congrats to all you tall peeps out there!!!! enjoy your turkey legs and chicken thighs to your 's content )

"With this method, the time comes eventually when you are either at or near your ideal weight. For the average person who is reducing drastically, it is best to come with 5 to 15 pounds of the ideal weight, then go on Stay Slim Eating (Calorie Counting) for a few months. After that you take off the remaining 5 to 15 excess pounds through the Quick Weight Loss Diet, then back to Stay Slim Eating when your ideal weight is achieved."

(I never followed this maintenance suggestion, it's always been a crash course in rapid fat elimination for me and perhaps that is why I always gain a lot back BUT not this time!! Im gearing up to change the game, hopefully after next week! I think I will put the calorie counting phase into my new plan. Something I have never done successfully in my life!! Wish me luck!!!)

Ok, thank you for the book link, Ms Al! And congrats on being so close to goal...and the calorie counting maintenance phase! I am laughing about "no more than eight hours of sleep." I thought it was a misprint yesterday in the excerpt. Glad to know I already have that habit mastered. I agree the book is so entertaining and refreshing! He is quite plain-spoken. I will definitely need to find a hard copy.

B, thank you so much! You are so close to size 2, wow so skinny! I am blown away at how easy this is. I have never been to Costco but love TJ's. I made a note to look for the crab next time I go. Normal stores like that are are two hours away but my local market is fine too.

Thank you Jean. Congrats to you! Glad you are staying.

DL, thanks much. Your story with Atkins is so helpful. Some of us can't maintain on Atkins. I'm peri-meno so I wonder if it has to do with changing hormones for me. Have you always run? I am in week seven of a start-running program called couch to 5K and enjoying getting out each day for that. Good for my mental health for sure.

Youre welcome Amy! and THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I can't remember who originally found the link, but I definitely like to promote it. lololol

Can I join in on the Couch to 5K??? I think it would be great if I had buddies. I actually purchased a treadmill a few months ago, and used it until I was done watching the entire shameless series.. Never to be stepped on again..

I have to get my butt in gear!! (and it gives me a great excuse to have to keep checking in here with my favorite people!!)
