Stevia Issues and Warning

I recently was having a couple things with Stevia. I thought I was having a fibro flare. It turns out it's the Stevia. I wanted to post a warning for those that are sensitive to things. I know some may have no issues but I have been severely ill from it for a couple weeks. That is only 2 Zevia sodas a day. I just wanted to post in case anyone is having issues they can pull it and see if the health issues go away. I would have never thought a leaf considered "Safer" than other sweeteners could cause pain, inflammation and make me sick.

There is some stevia in some of the foods I eat regularly, and I've thought about cutting it out - I've read that people with common allergies (ragweed, pollen) may have issues with it. I really like the products, but - I may have to shut it down. Thanks for posting, I felt pretty alone in those thoughts!

Wow, I wouldn't have thought of that, but it makes sense.

A lot of folks think because a product is "natural" it's safe. Not necessarily true if you have allergies.

I mean, poison oak is "natural" but I sure stay far away from it!

It does make sense that one should avoid it if one is allergic to it. It is a good idea to research a bit before trying new products just to be on the safe side.

I'm not allergic to stevia or similar plants; I've used it and enjoyed it for many years.

I am allergic to ragweed but stevia doesn't seem to bother me.

I wouldn't have thought it would cause such pain and inflammation. I have allergies but this is far worse than allergies. I wouldn't have guessed it. I mean I've had bad sugar alcohol and the nasty stomach cramps when I realized I ate it. I didn't get congested. I ended up with huge inflammation, headaches, stiff joints and chronic horrid pain that I couldn't get to go down. I guess I just expected allergy symptoms if I was allergic. I consider 2 zevia root beers with stevia in them or 1 to be getting a very small amount and it's a bit scary how much pain it caused.

That sounds like hell, val! I'm sorry you had to go through the experience, but thank you for alerting us to the possibility of such unpleasant side effects.

I have fibro flares so I just wanted to throw it out there for anyone who has chronic pain. I'm sure some people do great on it. But if you do tend to have pain nothing would be hurt by tossing it out of your menu for 2 weeks.

I've gone months without using stevia (extended Whole30 to help with pain management) and adding it back it did not increase my pain level at all.

I highly recommend Whole30 (can easily be done low carb or keto) to anyone, especially those with chronic pain and/or health concerns.

Zevia also contains other ingredients-- i.e. erythritol. Are you certain it was the stevia? I wonder if trying pure stevia may help you figure out which ingredient affected you.
