Stillman's Summer Challenge! Let's MELT Away the POUNDS!

Hi everyone

As a long-term, very experienced ZC-er and VLC-er, having done both for many months on end, many different times in my life until now, I am now about to start my own personal Stillman's challenge, for the rest of July and August.

The difference is - this time, I am doing it BY THE BOOK. ALL of my many previous attempts with Stillmans in the past have been deeply unpleasant, - because I was trying to be ULTRA strict.

Eating boiled chicken breast in broth, is not a long term diet - not even just for temporary weight loss!

I also NEVER allowed myself any dairy on Stillmans, - even though his plan allows ALL kinds of skim and non-fat dairy options, including fresh cheeses.

I always allowed myself to eat full-fat dairy on Atkins, yet on Stillman's, I decide to punish myself even harder, and not even eat from what is on his allowed list? Torture!

So this time, I am doing my first Stillman's Challenge where I eat it as it was intended - and that includes non-fat dairy.

My Stillman's plan for the summer is going to be a variety of cycling fresh cooked protein options. I will choose the cuts that appeal to me, as on my grate on the grill, most of the extra fat melts away and drips out anyway. Nothing more drastic than that is needed. Fat still comes in at 30%-55% on Stillmans just from naturally occurring fats, and that is fine for health. But as all those of us who regularly use Stillman's plans know, it is also WAY easier to lose with numbers in this lower fat range for a lot of people, than it is with fat at 75%-80% of macros, as on usual keto or HFLC.

For me, and I expect for A LOT of other people too, it is also WAY easier to keep calories down, with higher protein and lower fat numbers.

I grill burgers ALL of the time. And I will continue to use 85/15, like I always do. ALL of the extra fat remains at the bottom of my oven broiler pan or grill, if I use my little grate. Chicken that has been roasted to the point that the skin is crunchy, for example, also has no "extra" fat left in the skin to speak of. It has all cooked off.

So my challenge is, please anyone come and join me, if you want to do this SAME plan with me!

The challenge is, committing through till September 1, 100%, no cheats. For me, that means even giving up the 2 tiny glasses of champagne I was having, 2 x a month.

I do consider that less than 5g added total carbs per day from net effect 0 carb vegetables like pickle slices and/or a couple of slices of peeled cucumber are FINE, in addition to everything that is already on Stillman's list - because in that quantity, they are used as a condiment. That would be what I would allow myself to make the plan doable. Dr. Stillman did allow condiments in general, but I don't eat relish/mayo/mustard/ketchup. So personally, I am trading in 2-3 pickle slices for the former.

I do think in general that tweaks are not ok, unless it's something that is clearly in line with the plan. Protein powder as a food supplement or meal replacer did not exist in Dr. Stillman's 1960s, but protein powders with no sugars and with <1g fat would CLEARLY have been Dr. Stillman's approved, for example.

That is probably more or less about as far as I would tweak the original plan, and still consider that it's ok. For the most part however, sure; of course that cooked protein from the Stillman's Allowed Quick Weight Loss list should form the absolute foundation of ALL eating on this plan.

We can have a weekly weigh-in, and I know that we already have a GREAT daily chat for support. So if anyone wants to comment on anything additional here, like how much they lost from one day to the next, or what they ate that preceded an exciting drop, that would be super! Anything to keep us even more motivated!

So if anyone is interested in additionally keeping track of their official weekly progress here, please join me!

Yesterday I ate 1000 kcal and 150g protein. I think after MUCH trial and error and testing, 150g of protein is my absolute sweet spot, for NO hunger, whatsoever. I am 5ft 11, btw.

And I dropped two whole more pounds by this morning, despite even eating half a pound of yogurt, late at 8pm at night! YASSSS!

WOOHOO!! I know you haven't posted in this thread yet today Jeanie, but congrats on your drop since yesterday, and on almost being back in the 120s!! IT IS GOING TO BE THIS WEEK FOR YOU, how exciting is that? Maybe even tomorrow!

Me, I have lost 6 lbs for my first full Stillman's week back on this plan. But as I said in the other thread, I have come from 3+ months of being on very strict induction, so I am already totally fat-adapted. NO ONE gives results like Dr. Stillman's gives results!

And my 6 lb loss was with eating about 2 cups of fat-free greek yogurt per day. A couple of days I did have slightly even more. The results on ANY GIVEN PLAN, will always speak for themselves!!!

I am trying to visualize in my mind's eye, how I will look and feel when I am back to goal again. It helps a little with motivation, to keep the eye on the prize.

I am also SO HOPPING MAD right now, that I WASTED 3 whole MONTHS (since April 12th!!!) on Atkins <20g total induction until now, because I was NOT abusing the cheese allowance, I used NO cream, and I ate NO nuts.

And I have so much to lose, and I literally lost practically nothing! I could cry over losing a quarter of a YEAR, with that!

So thank you, Dr. Stillman's, for being the voice of reason and of common sense, and for giving us a diet that WORKS, and that works on EVERYBODY, no matter what!

That is still a GREAT loss for you!! I am recording weekly losses, under each week. That way we can monitor progress from one week to then next. Make sense?

The challenge is supposed to go until Sept 1, so I would tally my total for the 9 weeks at that point.

This way I (or any of us who want to log here) can see on a weekly basis, how we're doing as we go along through the summer.

I am happy with this week's loss. To lose more than 5 lbs just reinforces to me that I am SO glad that this is the first time that I have EVER tried the diet as written - because I always banned the nonfat yogurt before. I have not ventured as far as the farmer's cheese yet - but only because I haven't had a chance to get any yet. I might have time to do that tomorrow.

My results this month, as today marks end of Week 4, are colored by less than a 1 pound loss in week 1, and NO pounds lost in week 3.

I actually committed to giving up alcohol on what Day 2. So In other words, I had alcohol on Day 1. And then I spent a llllllllllllllll week trying to get down my 2 lb bounce UP, go back back to where it was. 7 days is not a lot of days to fight with the scale like that, that is why my net loss for week 1 was only -0.7.

So I do not consider that Week 1 was a true Stillman's week, and Week 3 was TOM.

I had a REALLY rough evening last night where I REALLY wanted to go out and just to relax and to have a couple of drinks because my last couple weeks have been BRUTAL. And it was a LOT of internal dialogue and arguing, to NOT go out and do that.

And HOW glad am I today??? That I stuck to my dieting guns?? Because I lost over 5 lbs!!! Otherwise, by this morning too, I would have been at a disappointing ZERO pounds lost for the week.. Or if not for today, FOR SURE by this time next Saturday, I would have ONLY been KILLING MYSELF ALL WEEK LONG, to lose whatever the scale would have bounced up for me by tomorrow.

This was a REALLY big accomplishment for me, 4 weeks without even one single drink. I am really pleased with myself for sticking to my commitment right now, and I do consider that Dr. Stillman's has definitely rewarded me, and that his plan is NOT all empty promises. There is A LOT of hate in the wider LC community for "low fat" plans. On Stillman's I still hit 30%-50% fat in my daily macros, AND this plan WORKS!!!
